More Political Correctness run amok

#1 Post by rgbrock1 » Mon Dec 07, 2015 5:08 pm

The cancer of political correctness eating away at the foundation of the American university system has reached a new low. At the University of Tennessee, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion has released a list of “suggestions” emphasizing the need to avoid Christmas parties, because those expressing cultural and/or religious preferences run afoul of UT’s commitment to inclusion and diversity. They advise, “Ensure your holiday party is not a Christmas party in disguise.”

“The university does not have an official policy regarding religious and cultural décor and celebration in the workplace,” states an online document entitled “Best Practices for Inclusive Holiday Celebrations in the Workplace.” “However, we are fully committed to a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive environment.” Thus UT bureaucrats have compiled a series of bullet points outlining the “best practices for inclusive holiday celebrations.”

It includes such “insightful” ideas as building upon “workplace relationships and team morale with no emphasis on religion or culture,” giving New Year’s parties that have “décor and food from multiple religions and cultures,” pot-luck parties that “encourage employees to bring food items that reflect their personal religions, cultures, and celebrations,” and serving refreshments “not specific to any religion or culture.”

It gets worse. Supervisors and managers “should not endorse, or be perceived as endorsing, religion generally or a specific religion,” all holiday cards should be “nondenominational” expressions of one’s gratitude, and all religious holidays should only be celebrated “in ways that are respectful and inclusive of our students, your colleagues, and our university.”

Note that even a general endorsement of religion is frowned upon, courtesy of radical leftist ideologues as cultish and demanding as any primitive gaggle of howling moon-worshippers could ever be.

Even games are anathema to these spirit-sapping down-heads. “Holiday parties and celebrations should not play games with religious and cultural themes — for example, ‘Dreidel’ or ‘Secret Santa.’” So, the document advises, “If you want to exchange gifts, then refer to it in a general way, such as a practical joke gift exchange or secret gift exchange.”

I will be signing off my Christmas cards/letters/emails with the words :
"Happy Christmas, even if we're not allowed to call it that now in case we upset the Kamil Fakirs."
The irony is, that mostly the Muslims couldn't give a toss, it's the pathetic white do-gooders who want to jump on the outrage bus on someone else's behalf.

Funny, having just gone through Diwali celebrations here - both my partner has celebrations
because of quite a few Indians at school - and the town I live in has a big Diwali weekend
- I notice that the UT policy DOESN'T extend to other cultures.

From RGB
"It includes such “insightful” ideas as building upon “workplace relationships and team morale with no emphasis on religion or culture,” giving New Year’s parties that have “décor and food from multiple religions and cultures,” pot-luck parties that “encourage employees to bring food items that reflect their personal religions, cultures, and celebrations,” and serving refreshments “not specific to any religion or culture.”"

Are those statements not contradictory ?

It seems that everyone can celebrate anything as long as it is not Christian - Easter, Xmas !

I go to quite a few "other culture and religion" festivals each year. Heaps to chose from
here in Aus so you get a wide variety of choice.

Totally agree. What the do-gooders forget is that there wouldn't be a major commercial opportunity holiday at this time of year were it not for 'Christmas.'

Staying with the PC topic. I came across this in the Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... paces.html
Professors lead a backlash against college culture that demands subjects that could cause the slightest 'trauma' be scrubbed from syllabus.

At Brown, an Ivy League university, students have set up a 'safe space' that offered calming music, cookies, Play-Doh and a video of frollicking puppies to help students to cope with a discussion on how colleges should handle sexual assault. At Harvard there is a 'massage circle' to aid discussion on difficult topics. :ymsick:

The Uni I lectured at brought in real puppies last year.

Thirty years ago, I had to survive on nothing but very loud music, unsafe sex and a gallon of beer a night.

Save your pity ;)

Most Muslims couldn't give a toss and neither could any other religion or culture.

If we applied their rules, NO other culture or religion would be able to celebrate such and such a day
and that would make for a very boring Australia of meat pie and 3 vegetables with Turkey or Ham
for Christmas :D

A "massage circle"? Isn't this also called a circle jerk? :D

The vast majority of the students coming out of universities and colleges here in the U.S. nowadays are stark, raving lunatics. (And as stupid as a floor lamp as well.)

Interesting article.

Here is an interesting question.

" A student backlash against hearing words and ideas that oppose their own, citing emotional "trauma""

" As the law professor prepared for her class on sexual assault, she opened her emails to find a strange request: could she give assurances that the content of the class would not be included in the end-of-year exam, her students asked?

They were concerned there might be victims of sexual assault among their classmates, they said. Anyone in that position could be traumatised at being confronted with such material in the exam hall.

Across the United States, lecturers have received similar messages from students demanding that modules of academic study – ranging from legal topics to well-known works of literature – be scrubbed from exams, and sometimes from the syllabus altogether. "

How do you prepare a lawyer who doesn't want to hear about Sexual assault, Rape, Murder, Abortion because
it goes against what they believe in and might "traumatise" them ?

How the hell are they going to operate in a court of law and discuss Roe vs Wade if they don't look at past judgements ?

The mind boggles at how these people survive.

And why is it up to someone else to be "possibly offended on behalf of someone else who MIGHT have
been affected by Sexual assault" ?

Does that mean we don't discuss drinking driving and crashes because someone might have lost someone
they knew to a drink driver ?

Presumably it is contactless massage. I guess those drinking games with marauding Canadian students are also banned.

Real puppies Mr Fox? Surely that's cruelty to animals. I mean, putting them in the same room as disturbed students.

Mr TB worked out the value of his Exhibition in terms of gallons of beer. =))

Edit: 500N, same thoughts occurred to me + what about medical students faced with cadavers? Do they still dissect frogs in high school biology classes or is that too traumatic?

Utter balls of course.

My kids spent their formative years in Singapore and really life was one constant celebration with all the different religions there!
All generalisations are false, including this one.

We had a lovely Christmas card from the Muslim family who run our local convenience store; they have also fulminated against the perpetrators of assorted recent atrocities. We used to get a Christmas card from the Muslim family who ran the restaurant next door, as well as a tray of food, until they closed down. Spherical objects to the PC lot, says I.

I've just stuck in the post box a Christmas Card with a traditional nativity scene to the University of Tennessee principal and senior Diversity Officer. :D

Lol just checked out their diversity page which proudly states:

"Diversity
Welcoming to all and hostile to none. It’s a phrase we aspire to live by on our campus."

Somewhat redolent of the Christian salutation "peace and goodwill to all mankind" Gospel of Luke I believe. Maybe we should report them =))

Australia is the same.

Every festival known to man seems to be celebrated, on top of our very multi cultural society.

It is great for "foodies" but not good for the waist !

Actually the so-called UT Office of Diversity and Inclusions sounds like something out of George Orwell's 1984.

No they won't. They'll just declare it a gun/nuclear free zone before holding hands and singing Kumbaya. That way they'll be perfectly safe.

Meanwhile, in the real world their pitiful whining will attract the ravenous hordes like flies to a turd to enjoy the soft pampered meat when the entire ball of wax goes down the shitter.
