"An asteroid that was lost in 2007 has a slim chance of hitting the Earth next year, according to Nasa.
The asteroid, named 2007 FT3,was first spotted floating through space in 2007."

Some years ago, my son attended a homeschool science class and one fine day, they had a demonstration of what happens when you add water to a fat fire out in the car park. It was deliberate, everyone was kept well back and the local fire department was invited to come watch. It was spectacular, and even the fire crew was impressed because usually they only get to see the aftermath, not what caused a fire.

Sometimes, fire reality is the other way around.
Someone assessed a bunch of Hollywood movies to discover that 98% of crashing vehicles explode.
In reality, in California at least, it's 2%

It appears to be 100% at the Rainbow Bridge.

I do not think what happened to it was technically an explosion, but a vehicle fire.

You will note the initial video, where the guy watching from the window is certainly not acting how one would expect if there'd been a big bang.

I think the vehicle disintegrated when it hit the canopy structure over the customs search bays, as shown that it did on more recent videos, and the fire would seem to be from the remaining gasoline.

But did he fit in with the theme of the ride?

Streaker arrested after parading around Disneyland’s ‘It’s a Small World’ ride naked

An unhinged Disneyland guest was arrested after he was filmed tearing off his clothes and crawling around the iconic “It’s a Small World” ride in front of terrified riders.

The unidentified 26-year-old was filmed in his boxers climbing over the animatronic figures and sitting in a representation of the Taj Mahal as flying carpets circled overhead.

“Stop, stop! I need you to stop,” one staff member could be heard screaming at the man as he stumbled over the equipment.

“Please just stop, you’re going to get hurt.”

A guest watching the scene unfold then cried out, “Oh God, he’s going to break all the stuff.”

“They should stop the music,” said another of the ride’s cheerful tune.

Another video showed the man wading through the water bare naked before he made his way outside the attraction.

The unidentified naked man is pictured sitting in the Taj Mahal pool at the "It's a Small World" ride.

“I am on Small World and there was a streaker,” Ashley Esqueda posted on X. “I cannot believe this [is] happening.”

Eventually, a third video posted online showed the man being carried away by six security guards as a parkgoer calls him an “Idiot” and berates him for his acts “in front of all these kids.”

I would think the last song
a naked man would want to hear
would be "It's a small world"

A toaster placed under a car to warm up the battery is thought to have started a fire which destroyed the vehicle and damaged a house.

Police in Denmark said no one was injured in the blaze involving the electric vehicle - but added they "strongly discourage" people from using such a method to heat power cells.

The fire happened on Saturday in Stenlille, about 40 miles from Copenhagen.

The vehicle was parked under a carport-style shelter.

"The cause of the fire is most likely to be found in the toaster that the owner of the car had placed under the front of his car to keep the battery warm," police said.

Patient brings concealed gun into MRI machine, gets shot in buttocks

https://www.azfamily.com/2023/12/11/pat ... -buttocks/

(Gray News) – A 57-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks after she brought a concealed handgun into an MRI machine, according to an FDA report.

The report does not disclose where the incident occurred but said it happened back in June.

According to the FDA report, the patient was brought into the room and entered the MRI machine. The patient’s concealed handgun was attracted to the device’s magnetic field and fired a single shot.

The bullet struck the patient in the buttocks, and she was quickly tended to by medical staff on site.

A doctor described the patient’s entry and exit wounds as “very small and superficial,” the FDA report said, but she was still taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The woman told hospital staff that she was “OK and healing well.”

Health care workers said prior to entering the MRI machine, the patient had been asked if she had any forbidden items on her, including firearms, as part of a standard screening procedure. They said she answered “no” to all screening questions.

According to the FDA report, GE Healthcare, which makes the MRI device, is investigating further.

Phoenix man arrested after allegedly pointing laser at passenger jet, police helicopter

https://www.azfamily.com/2023/12/22/pho ... elicopter/

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Phoenix police say a man was arrested Thursday evening for shining a laser pointer at a passenger jet and a police helicopter. He’s been identified as 35-year-old William Hill.

A Phoenix PD helicopter responded to a neighborhood near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road around 8:30 p.m. after the crew of a Southwest flight reported a laser strike as the plane was making its final descent into Sky Harbor. As the police helicopter arrived, a green laser was reportedly pointed at the front of the cockpit. The crew tracked the origin of the laser beam to a house on Indianola Avenue and saw two men standing in the backyard.

Officers arrived moments later and found three men standing in the driveway. According to court documents, when asked about the incident, two residents said Hill “has lots of gadgets,” including a green laser he uses to play with cats.

Police then spoke with Hill, who first said no one had a laser. After being detained, documents say Hill admitted to owning a green laser and that he was using it in the backyard, “testing out how powerful it was.” He said he was not trying to point it at planes or helicopters. Officers later recovered a laser from the home, and Hill was booked into the Maricopa County jail on two felony counts of aiming a laser pointer at an occupied aircraft.

The FAA confirmed an investigation is underway and released a statement about another laser strike near Sky Harbor later that night.

“The flight crew of Delta Air Lines Flight 1672 reported being illuminated by a green laser near Phoenix, Arizona, around 11:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, Dec. 21. Local authorities were notified. The FAA will investigate.

Pilots reported 9,500 laser strikes to the FAA in 2022. Two hundred and seventy-eight pilots have reported an injury from a laser strike to the FAA since 2010. People who shine lasers at aircraft face FAA fines of up to $11,000 per violation and up to $30,800 for multiple laser incidents. The FAA issued $120,000 in fines for laser strikes in 2021.”

FAA
Data from the FAA (see chart below) shows 482 laser incidents have been reported in Arizona. Earlier this year, the FAA investigated after two commercial aircraft were hit by lasers in Phoenix on Super Bowl Sunday. Here’s how to report laser strikes.

It’s unclear if Phoenix police have identified a suspect in the second incident.

Editor’s note: The FAA initially reported the only laser strike in Phoenix Thursday night involved Delta flight 1652. Hill is not connected to that investigation since he was already in custody at that time.

I suppose the use of the laser pointer was 'accidental' as the device switched itself on as it was being carried passively, being transported from one location to another.

Honest . . .

Accused drunk driver passes out near police station, mistaking it for hotel, cops say

https://www.yahoo.com/news/accused-drun ... ccounter=1

A Wisconsin man was arrested on a drunk driving charge after he mistook a police station for a hotel, according to police.

Officers with the Marshfield Police Department noticed a Toyota SUV parked halfway into a parking space outside the station about 2:30 am. on Jan. 4, a police report said.

The vehicle was still running and as officers approached, they could see the driver was hunched over behind the wheel, police said. He woke up when officers knocked on the glass, but he had a hard time rolling the window down to speak with them, police said.

Officers said there were empty cans of beer “scattered throughout” the man’s SUV and “a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his breath.”

He told officers he thought the police station was the hotel where he was staying, police said.

The officers tried to conduct a field sobriety test, but the man was too intoxicated to do several of the tests, police said. He also blew a .265 on a breath test, according to police, which is well above the legal blood alcohol limit of .08.

He was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated, police said, adding that it was the man’s fourth OWI.

Marshfield is about 130 miles west of Green Bay.

Man stole semi-truck from Arizona travel stop to get home from prison, CCSO says

https://www.azfamily.com/2024/02/16/man ... ccso-says/

WILLCOX, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — Investigators say a man admitted to stealing a semi-truck from a southern Arizona truck stop because he needed a way to get home from prison. Isaiah Walker, 23, of Lawton, Oklahoma, allegedly stole a truck hauling over $1 million worth of high-end sports cars.

It began Wednesday morning at the Love’s Travel Stop near Interstate 10 in Willcox. According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, Walker approached a driver and began talking to him about his truckload. CCSO says the driver was transporting 10 Chevrolet C8 Corvettes with an estimated value of around $1.25 million.

Isaiah Walker, 23, was booked into the Cochise County jail on several felony charges,...

The sheriff’s office says that as the victim was getting in his truck to leave, Walker threw him to the ground, jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away. A sheriff’s deputy spotted the stolen semi-truck about nine miles north of the Love’s store and tried to get the driver to pull over. CCSO says Walker began driving recklessly, causing other cars to drive off the road, and finally stopped a few minutes later near Fort Grant and County Line roads.

After being taken into custody, the sheriff’s office says Walker admitted to taking the truck, but not because he was trying to steal the Corvettes. He reportedly told a sheriff’s deputy and police officer that he had just been released from prison and needed the truck to get home.

Walker was booked into the Cochise County jail on several felony charges, including robbery and theft. The stolen semi-truck was returned to the driver with no damage.

“I am extremely proud of the officer and deputy involved in this investigation, Willcox Police Chief Dale Hadfield said in a social media post. “The deputy and officer showed great restraint and patience in bringing a serious crime to a peaceful resolution, all while keeping the property of others from being damaged.”

I was always advised never to drive south of Phoenix without having enough fuel to not stop anywhere, nor should one ever stop at any roadside 'incident' or to pick up a hitch-hiker.
In practice, the only times I ever went south of Phoenix was by air. One was better off landing/taking off on a road (which I have done) than driving down it.

My first introduction to Phoenix was more granular.
A fellow student at flight school, a year behind me, couldn't get a CFI job so he went back to his previous job in Phoenix.
I came down to visit him on a break from my first 135 job flying tours over The Grand Canyon out of Tusayan.
He sat me down and gave me an orientation to metro Phoenix.
His ,what turned out to be sage advice was, North good, South bad, streets good (East), avenues (West) bad.
Over the next few years, both from reading the main newspaper and watching the local PHX news, his advise was validated.
When I moved here almost 22 years ago his observations figured prominently in my ultimate decision on where to buy a home.
That advice still holds true today.

When D1 lived in Annapolis near the USN Academy, we went for a walk one day, somewhere N or NW of the area. Nice houses, nice areas, then suddenly the nature of the area changed. Locked gates, big warning signs, vehicles on blocks, but we didn't see a soul. Felt slightly uncomfortable. In Australia, I've always walked around town when visiting new places, and walking through wealthy and poorer areas, I've only once felt uncomfortable, and that was in Bourke, whose reputation I knew.

The police station there continues the tradition. Steel shutters on all windows & doors.
