Aircraft I haven't flown but would like to!

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Thu Jun 16, 2022 12:46 pm

I know that it is regarded as a bit infra dig to post aviation posts around the Crew Room but I cannot think of a better place to ask "what if" and dream a little. I know that some here have flown some very interesting types, but unless they are like Eric "Winkle" Brown there must be types that they never got to fly, and you don't even have to be a pilot to dream on this thread!

Well I dreamed, actually I did last night, that I was flying a de Havilland Mosquito along the West Coast of Africa at low level and I haven't had a better dream since I dreamed that I had had breakfast with Marilyn Monroe! :)

What aircraft tickles your fancy?

Difficult when your bucket is almost full 😆. No one aircraft was older than 25 years when today many are over 25.

But you must have one type in your log, or not, that still brings a gleam to your aircraft sated eye! ;)))

That's different and hard to chose. Maybe an F6 at low level over the Malacca Straits?

Obviously impossible, the Concorde. I know folks who have flown it. The Boeing 747. That would have been amazing but I probably would have been bored after a while. A Gulfstream 650. Just magnificent. Beautifully engineered and really well thought out. A mate flies one. I'd have to leave the current job but that's probably not going to happen.
Otherwise, I reckon I havev been bloody lucky to have flown what I have flown. :)

Any chance of moving up to the Global 7500 or 8000 (if they get any)? :-?

Just before we leave Marilyn I assume you were having breakfast in bed?
Strange that you were all thinking of piloting a type and I was thinking of sitting in the back!
For me I would quite like to go long haul in something like Reddo would fly just to see what it would be like..

At one stage I was an avid flight-simmer (how I got my screen-name by participating in online group-flying where appropriate screen-names were required for identification).

Solo I was quite into heavies such as Lancaster and Shackleton as well as Harrier and helos.

PHXPhlyer,
Over "here" we have the Global 6500 and 5000. I am not senior enough to get onto one before I retire in 3 years' time (going early). Our US arm has the Global 7500 but according to my US mates, that's reserved for the special ones... To be honest, I wouldn't want to fly those types in our operation, too much like hard work. For a private owner, much better. A lot more time off to recover.

One extreme to the other. Spitfire and A380. Trouble with the latter is that you are not really flying it you are a systems operator.

For a period of time we had one of these based locally...

If I recall correctly you were a member of the order of the Iron Ring if you were endorsed on it,....and then it disappeared, I knew people who would have loved to have flown it...

Two types, one of the Piston engine and t' other Jet.

A Spitfire MkIX and the Lockheed F104 Starfighter.

The one type I really wanted to fly was the Harrier. Missed out on a ride in one by my own hospitality. I'd arranged a ride in a T2 that was down with us doing trials work and took the pilot down the pub the evening before. Unfortunately the beer in the Blue Anchor disagreed with him, so he deemed himself unfit to fly the following day.

There are some contrasting types in my log books, though. First ever flight was a Slingsby T-21, an air experience flight from RAF Halton when I was 14. Last entry in my last log book is a Spitfire Mk9 from a year or so ago. Somehow I don't think I can hope to ever top that, so it shall probably remain the last entry.

You must be joking.
From 1961 onwards, Germany acquired 916 Lockheed F-104 Starfighters, of which 292 aircraft crashed and 116 pilots lost their lives.
