Phonetic alphabet

#1 Post by Opsboi » Fri Aug 12, 2022 8:10 pm

I found it comes in more and more useful in these days of international call-centres - until today when giving my postcode as Kilo Tango

Silence

Then 'Is that K for Keith and T for Tea?'

Oh, well

The Italian version is city names in Italy, eg A-Ascoli R-Roma N-Napoli etc. I have no idea what it might be in German or Serbo-Croat.

Singapore non-aviators used primarily Countries, or Cities if they couldn't think of a Country, when I was there, A for Albania, B for Bulgaria, C for Canada, but not always the same, no approved list published, seemed to be at the operators geographical expertise. Can't remember what was used for X ? I also worked with ex- WWII pilots who used what was in use when they started flying, Able, Baker, etc. Occasionally get corrected by telephone operators who prefer their own ideas. Guess it doesn't matter so long as they catch the correct word ?

Don't remember anyone using Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogog tho' ?

I thought it was O for the garden wall.

Had a school teacher, ex 7Div AIF, who did the whole A for 'orses, B for mutton... etc. I've forgotten most of them, but some were very clever.

...........who did the whole A for 'orses, B for mutton... etc.
Have heard some of those but never knew there was a whole alphabet. Anybody know it ? Maybe we should make one up ?

How about ? ........A for 'orses, B for mutton, C for miles, D for mation, E for mayor, F for Vescence, G for fox sake, I for an eye, L for leather (!), O for the garden wall, P for relief, Q for the bus, R for mo, T for two, U for me,

And me but my pronunciation was criticiced by a sheep sha**er.

I have had people write down the whole word instead of the letter.
