De khaki non est disputandum!

#1 Post by TheGreenAnger » Mon Jan 02, 2023 7:23 pm

Except with my better half who insists that khaki is more green than tan.

The boers knew what colour English khaki was and wore it later themselves

As a green creature I insist on the correct definition.

This is khaki.

The vegetable dye used for khaki uniforms was made from stewed Blakeney Red Pears. Blakeney is 10 miles down the A48 from here. The khaki I rmember from my army cadet days was definitely brown.

Fwiw, Kipling's Lieutenant Golightly wore "a new khaki suit—tight fitting—of a delicate olive-green".

When it became wet the "khaki colour ran too—it was really shockingly bad dye—and sections of Golightly were brown, and patches were violet, and contours were ochre, and streaks were ruddy-red, and blotches were nearly white, according to the nature and peculiarities of the dye."

Tan!

I have heard the term 'khaki brown' but never ever 'khaki green'.
It's always my fault - SWMBO

Fantastic story. How times don't change.

The verse at the start reminded me of an exercise I was on at OTU.

Platoon is in a Defensive Position for the night. Captain D., one of the DS, is going around outside the perimeter to ensure that all picquets are awake and alert. At the first post, he is challenged by OCdt Murphy. (The challenge is 'Dry', and the response is supposed to be 'Shed').

Captain D: Well done, Murphy. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the response.
Ocdt Murphy: You're Captain D, you made up the passwords. Bang, you're dead.
Captain D. Very good Murphy, that's the correct action. Now, what is the correct response.
Ocdt Murphy: 'Cloud', sir.
Captain D moves on to the next post, and is duly challenged.
Picquet: Dry
Captain D: Cloud
Picquet: Bang, you're dead, sir.

Captain D went on to become a Brigadier, Murphy reached 2nd Lieutenant.
