2 killed in suspected grizzly bear attack in Canada’s Banff National Park

https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/02/americas ... index.html

Two people are dead after a suspected grizzly bear attack in Canada’s Banff National Park, officials said.

Rescuers were first alerted to the incident around 8 p.m. Friday after receiving “an alert from an inReach/GPS device indicating a bear attack,” the national park said in a statement.

The alert said the incident happened in the Red Deer River Valley area of the park, which is in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

“Parks Canada immediately mobilized a Wildlife Human Attack Response Team whose members are specially trained in responding to wildlife attacks,” Banff National Park said in the statement. “Weather conditions at the time did not allow for helicopter use, and the response team travelled through the night to the location by ground.”

Police tape blocks off part of West Yellowstone, Montana, after a fatal bear attack in July.
A grizzly bear that killed a woman earlier this year gets euthanized after breaking into a house with a cub to steal food
The response team arrived at the site around 1 a.m. Saturday and found two people dead and a grizzly bear displaying aggressive behavior, the statement said.

Parks Canada staff euthanized the bear “to ensure public safety,” and Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers arrived at the scene to assist in transporting the victims to Sundre, Alberta, about 75 miles northwest of Calgary, officials said.

“This is a tragic incident, and Parks Canada wishes to express its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims,” the statement said.

The deadly suspected grizzly attack in Canada happened just weeks a grizzly bear linked to the death of a woman in July near West Yellowstone was euthanized in Montana after breaking into a home through a window with a cub and taking a container of dog food.

In 2020, the same bear was also involved in an encounter that injured a person near Henrys Lake State Park in Idaho, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks said in a news release.

The male cub who was near the adult grizzly was captured and was being held in Helena at the agency’s wildlife rehabilitation center before it was set to be transferred to a zoo, officials said.

And last month, portions of Custer Gallatin National Forest near Big Sky, Montana, were closed after a person was attacked by a grizzly bear while hunting, officials said.

Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park, is a popular attraction for tourists, known for its picturesque turquoise waters. Parks Canada notes the park is “home to hundreds of species, including grizzly bears, wolves, elk and more.”

A plague of bedbugs has hit Paris and other French cities, provoking a wave of insectophobia and raising questions about health and safety during next year's Olympic Games.

Man attacked by grizzly bear in Montana to return home after losing his lower jaw, says he’s ready for ‘round 2’

https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/14/us/monta ... index.html

Rudy Noorlander, who lost part of his jaw in a grizzly bear attack in Montana last month, says he’s looking forward to a special treat as he prepares to leave the hospital.

“‘That first root beer float is going to taste so amazing,’” the Navy veteran said through a letter of thanks read by his daughter, KateLynn Noorlander-Davis, at a Friday news conference at University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City.

Noorlander, 61, underwent three surgeries in the past five weeks at the hospital after a bear bit off his lower jaw on September 8 in Custer Gallatin National Forest near Big Sky, Montana.

After a complete jaw reconstruction, physicians and Noorlander’s daughters say he’s nearly ready to rejoin his family and his dog, Sully, in Montana. The family says they’re hoping he can return home on Monday.

“‘Soon, I’m going to be a free-range chicken and won’t be hooked up to anything,’” Noorlander said in the letter his daughter read.

Noorlander, who is still recovering from the injuries, used a whiteboard and a marker to answer questions at the news conference.

“It does hurt a little when he tries to speak,” Noorlander-Davis said.

He’s expected to make a full recovery as he works on regaining his ability to eat normally and talk, according to his surgeon, Dr. Hilary McCrary.

The bear attack happened after Noorlander attempted to help hunters locate a deer they thought they had killed, according to the family’s GoFundMe campaign.

His family said Friday he was attacked on a trail he’d traveled over the past two decades.

Noorlander encountered an adult grizzly bear and pulled out a gun to scare the animal away when a larger bear approached him, the GoFundMe page read.

Noorlander was unable to fight the bear and it bit off his lower jaw. The hunters he was assisting scared the animal off and called for help, the post stated.

The attack wasn’t Noorlander’s first experience with a bear. He shared on Friday that he also encountered one when he was 10.

There’s a chance that his most recent encounter may not be his last. “I will win round two,” Noorlander jokingly wrote on his marker board.

“I would like for him to not do that!” laughed Noorlander-Davis, who described her father on GoFundMe as “the bravest and strongest man I know.”

His family and life have given him hope and motivation through his recovery, said Noorlander, whose family noted has kept a positive attitude despite what he’s endured.

“He’s been racing people in the hallways, and we’re like, ‘take it easy,’” Noorlander-Davis said.

He did not yet want to discuss the attack, saying that he would eventually tell his story in a book, according to his daughters.

“He would like Cole Hauser from (the Paramount Network series) ‘Yellowstone’ to play him in a movie,” Noorlander-Davis said.

Ashley Noorlander said her dad is already planning to go snowmobiling again by December.

“We’re just super happy he’s alive and here,” she said.

Orcas’ latest boat attack claims yacht sailing in Strait of Gibraltar
Despite an attempt to take the boat to the nearest port, the yacht sank near the entrance to the port of Tanger Med, about an hour’s drive east of the city of Tangiers.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/yach ... rcna124360

A yacht sank after it was attacked by a pod of orcas for 45 minutes, a sailing company has said, marking the latest assault on a boat by the sea mammals this year.

Polish tour operator Morskie Mile — which means "sea miles" — said in a Facebook post that its yacht Grazie Mamma II was attacked while sailing the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco on Oct. 31.

The whales attacked the boat's rudder, the company said, causing major damage and a leak. Despite an attempt by the captain to take the boat to the nearest port, and a rescue attempt that involved the Moroccan Navy, the yacht sank near the entrance to the port of Tanger Med, about an hour's drive east of the city of Tangiers.

The boat's crew were unharmed, the company said in a statement that NBC News translated from Polish. The same statement was posted to the company's website by company owner Lech Lewandowski.

"For us, this yacht was everything that was great about sea sailing," he said.

"Long-term friendships were formed onboard. We sailed this yacht through the most beautiful places in Europe and the Atlantic archipelagos, trained numerous yacht helmsmen, discovered the beautiful and unknown, tasted Mediterranean specialties and sailed, sailed, sailed," Lewandowski continued.

The company said it was planning to honor forthcoming cruise bookings by using "friends' yachts." Future trips will take in the Baltic Sea, Norway, Italy and the Canary Islands, according to the company's website. A single leg of a voyage can cost 1,800 Polish zloty ($432).

In May, it emerged that orcas were responsible for attacking and sinking three boats in southern Europe. Encounters between orcas and humans have been increasing since 2020, researchers say, but no human deaths have been reported.

The increased orca-boat activity has led to a slew of internet memes this year, with some claiming they were joining the "orca wars" on the side of the orcas.

In September, a Russian boat on a round-the-world trip was sunk after a prolonged attack by tiny cookiecutter sharks.

Interesting. I've been around the Strait a few times on boats. Seen lots of dolphins, even he occasional swordfish, but never orcas. I wonder if they were always there, or if this is a new development?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... horse.html

In the good old days when they used to bring the horses over from Oireland in a Bristol Frightener, they always had handlers with them*. Horses in general don't like aircraft and 7.5 hours is a long time.

* Who apparently would often give the loaders a few useful betting tips.
