Re: Knysna, Western Province
As you know Knysna is on the Garden Route so you have a smorgasbord of sightseeing, walking, hiking, beach coming, swimming, fishing, bird watching etc. available to you within easy driving distance from Knysna itself. Go and have a look at the Knysna Heads.

Take a trip up the Garden Route, stopping off in the Wilderness and visit the Nature's Valley Beach further up the coast.

For a day trip trip I would suggest a drive via George inland over the very picturesque Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn and go and visit the Kango Caves.
Best advice I can give you is to drive defensively, and expect any form of lunacy on the road. As for security, as far as SA goes, the Knysna area is pretty safe, but keep your wits about you. Car windows shut when driving, expensive cameras, watches etc. out of sight and so on. Watch out for peddlers at traffic lights, known as robots in SA. Bone up on the driving etiquette of 4 way stops...
Most of all have fun and enjoy South Africa. The area you are going to is a very beautiful place. I hope you have an enjoyable stay.

Re: Knysna, Western Province
As you approach Knysna on the N2 from the West there is a steep hill going down towards the lagoon with a fairly low speed limit. A sensible limit for trucks but uncomfortably low for a car. There is often a police speed trap (think police person hiding in a bush with a hand held speed gun) about half way down.

Knysna Elephant Park is a beautiful place and you can sleep in the bouma with the Ellies, when I did it there was complaints about my snoring
When all else fails, read the instructions.

There’s quite a few golf courses in the area as well, if that’s one of your interests.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Re: Knysna, Western Province
Stopped by police for a random stop and search on my way back from Plett to Knysna
When asked to show my driver's licence, I said it was back in my apartment's safe
Was politely advised to carry it at all times while driving and wished a pleasant rest of my day
