Q for Ricardian
Q for Ricardian
Here's one you can probably help with - a friend from a warm place is apparently visiting Orkney and Shetland in July and is wondering what to wear, given that the average high temperature there is still colder than it ever gets where she lives. Will be outdoors, so expecting wind and rain, plus ferry rides.

Re: Q for Ricardian
Best bet is to wear several layers of clothing. If too hot remove a layer; if too cold, add a layer. Waterproof jacket and stout(ish) shoes recommended.

Re: Q for Ricardian
That's very useful information for me as well, Ricardian. Mrs GG and I are doing a cruise at the beginning of July starting in Inverness and then going via Buckie and Wick to Orkney for a couple of days and finishing in Scrabster. The weather sounds a bit like Lancashire but probably slightly cooler. I shall ask instruct SM to take note and pack accordingly!

Re: Q for Ricardian
I recall a guide to dressing for a Manitoba winter.
Q: But, how many layers is 'several'?
A: When dressed, pat yourself down. If you can still tell what gender you are, you don't have enough layers.

Life may not be the party you hoped for, but while you're here, you may as well dance.

I would make sure to have some sort of warm head-covering.
And gloves.

Re: Q for Ricardian
We have been to mainland Orkney in the summer, I would say that two layers with a good rain jacket is a minimum. You can get fine days on which you can shed a layer but you will certainly get days with plenty of wind and showers too.
I can second all of the advice above, but it is a lovely place!

Whilst we've got a Ricardian thread, may we thank him for the many smiles he gives us: (where do you get all those funnies?) and the odd word- and photo-pictures of Orkney life

Re: Q for Ricardian
Nice to know that my posts (usually stolen from various sites) are enjoyed. Always happy to promote Orkney whenever the occasion presents itself.
But beware! Sometimes the weather can turn quite nasty!
