DNA Testing in France

I read today that casual DNA testing is illegal in France. If a judicial process requires it then OK, but if you want to check that your father really is your father then you're out of luck. Presumably the French government fear that so many people would discover that they were the result of an affair that society would break down.

There is a very old saying that "It's a wise man who knows his own father". DNA testing brings in to sharp relief the truth of that saying.
