Drunkonyms

#1 Post by probes » Wed Feb 21, 2024 8:10 pm

A study in Germany has found there [= in Britain] are 546 words which mean drunk, including .... .

The team believe this could be because of Britain's deeply-rooted culture of social drinking and quirky sense of humour.
Well, gentlemen and not-so-numerous ladies?
Would you add your drunko-list first, only then it's ok to open the link: All 546 words that Brits use to mean 'drunk'... so which is YOUR favourite?

You can use almost any word as a euphemism for politely unmentionable bodily parts or processes.
It's the context that tells people what you are avoiding saying.

I do recall some linguist telling me that the Brits had the most words for drunk, the Americans for being angry, and the Australians for being sick, compared to each other.

Not quite the same but our GP used to describe 'baby talk' as talking scribble.

I like the West Country term 'Spannered', oft heard around Bath, Brizzle, and in this case, Sh!t-n-Smellit*.

*As the locals refer to Shepton Mallet.
