Vibrator virus steals your personal information

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix » Mon Feb 26, 2024 6:57 pm

From a Malwarebytes blog today :-o :

Malwarebytes blog - beware out there!
A Malwarebytes Premium customer started a thread on Reddit saying we had blocked malware from trying to infect their computer after they connected a vibrator to a USB port in order to charge the device. The vibrator, Spencer’s Sexology Pussy Power 8-Function Rechargeable Bullet Vibrator, was infected with an information stealer known as Lumma.

Lumma is available through a Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) model, where cybercriminals pay other cybercriminals for access to malicious software and its related infrastructure. Lumma steals information from cryptocurrency wallets and browser extensions, as well as two-factor authentication details. Lumma is often distributed via email campaigns, but nothing stops the cybercriminals from spreading it through infected USB drives, as is the case here.
Better unplug yours quickly! :D

Off Topic

There was a time when infections of this type were treated with a few shots of penicillin.

I wondered what sort of information it could get. Based on its location when in use, it's hardly going be using facial recognition. Turns out it steals data when plugged into a computer to charge.

One wonders if the device promised to totally f#ck the user, and the computer virus was merely "part of the service"? ;)))

I think what the article omits to report is that it is not the vibrator that gets infected, but that there is a virus embedded in the vibrator and once it is plugged into a computer to charge the virus is installed into the computer and does what it was designed to do. It is no different than taking an unknown USB drive and plugging it into the computer and the USB contains a virus.

Designed to f**! your computer.

It wasn't clear whether it was supposed to have an active USB peripheral or whether that was an unexpected addition.
