Looking for a cheap simple 4G candy bar

#1 Post by unifoxos » Tue Feb 27, 2024 11:13 am

With the imminent demise of 2G/3G I have been looking for a replacement mobile phone. I have no signal where I live so I only use it when out and about and it doesn't really matter if it has 2G/3G or not, coverage from all networks is patchy around here. I don't have any need for data so a basic phone that does calls and texts is all I really need, though I'd like one with a 2mp camera.
As it doesn't get much use I don't want to pay a lot for it.

I am quite happy to buy a refurb or return and I don't care about the brand. I have spent hours searching but I have yet to come up with anything really suitable.

Anybody in a similar situation found a good choice?

Did the same for Mrs B, and we settled on the Nokia110 4g which is about £24 (sim free) It's small which is useful but its OS takes a bit of getting used to, although with Google's help we have sorted most of the 'annoyances' out. It has a 'sort' of 4g access if you need it, but not really for any serious mobile data work, however it does all the 'simple' tasks well.

I am in the same market.
I have completely gone off Samsung, since the bloatware you cannot delete has over 7 years, through updates to things like Google, filled the memory on my smartphone so I can't use any apps.
I understand Nokia is the only company with no bloatware, and I did have Nokias previously, but did not know until the last post that their little phones now do 4G. It's on my shopping list now.

I have to add that the 110 4g comes with several games (bloatware?) which cannot be deleted and clutter the menu screen, but overall it is a good solution to a need.

Terrific! I would be interested in a cheap 2g/4g Xiaomi phone (under £30)

My wife's parents, both in their 80s, have Doro phones.

I assume they do them in UK.

They are ideal, nothing fancy and big keys, ideal for seniors.

They are some of the cheaper offerings in Finland.

Hmm, Nokia sold it's mobile phone business to Microsoft a while back, quite annoyed the Finns at the time.

An ex? MS exec. (Elop?) was CEO when the deal was done.

I understand it was not a success.

Nokia branded phones are sold by somebody else now, I am sure google can tell who.

I was very loyal to them when it was Finnish.

I do buy Nokia tyres and Wellington boots though.

Your comment caused me to google "nokia" and read the story

Googling Elop (Stephen) made quite interesting reading also.

When I want a cheap phone I just ask one of the kids or grand kids for one of their old ones, even if they don't have one available they usually know a mate with a drawer full!!

....or go out and nick one from all those witless individuals chatting and oblivious to their surroundings or young girls with phones sticking out the back pockets of their jeans. Deserve to lose them.

Fist Xiaomi cost around £80 new. However they are so good I've been going upmarket. Last one cost £200 for a 12 pro.

I have a Samsung Galaxy A12.

I don't know whether it runs on 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G or 6G.

I had a Samsung many years ago, then baulked at the cost of a new one, seemed to have many features I didn't need and didn't see the point of paying for. I ended up with a Motorola (now part of Lenovo) and have stuck with them ever since. Their top of the range is more than I need, I tend to go for something more mid-range.

There are three of us in the family so it's one each, although Marlene the cat doesn't use hers. One SIM card costs €1 a month and another is free.

Curious you should mention this: I had a text from my mobile service provider ('Spark') this morning,
'Don't forget, we're closing our 3G network towards the end of 2025...' which was the first I'd heard of it.
