Former colleague, old gliding mate of Pinky,
Ah yes; Jan Coolhaas! Not so much an old Gliding mate but to me he was Mr Coolhaas!
After all, he was a good 30 or so years older than me!

I still have the scoreboard nameplate of his from the '72/73 (?) National Gliding Competitions when he was flying a HP14 which broke up in flight, and he had to take to the 'chute.

I always feel somewhat privileged to have known a lot of the early Aussie Gliding fraternity.

He had an interesting life. Father a professor (botany I think), flew bombers during WW II, Later aerial surveys in then Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), before getting into hydrology. He was a very intelligent and personable bloke. First glider pilot to use his parachute in Australia, and only because the rules said he had to wear one. He said he was trying to remember all the things he'd been taught about parachute landings during the war. At the last minute he remembered to spit his false teeth out, the farmer who picked him up went out and found them in the paddock.

I feel privileged to know the site where to find such interesting stories of the days long gone!
Seriously, at that.

DWail has its moments, too:

I think you'll find that is pic of a chemtrail dispenser, not a cloud seeder?

An interesting and level-headed article, which rather debunks the scaremongering headlines. Interesting to read that it had been forecast, too. Were it not for the fact that Dubai is full of Generation Z 'influencers', we would probably not have heard about it at all.

Indeed. Knowing the aversion of jet engines to water in those sorts of quantities, I was surprised that such events were taking place!
