They could at least have built the runway where Slough now stands.

Zak Goldsmith 'resigns' the whip in protest.

#23 Post by Boac » Tue Oct 25, 2016 7:28 pm

I am puzzled why Goldsmith has taken such a hard position on this and resigned from the Conservative party. As MP for Richmond (just south of the 26L approach) he and his constituents will be very little affected by a runway to the north-west of Heathrow. Is there some political grandstanding at play here?

The other 'non-sequiter' is that it looks as if the by-election he has caused will only be contested by the Lib-Dems from the main parties. They are also anti the runway. Go figure?

I think it's partly in a fit of pique, but there's more to being near an airport than simply being under the flight path. It's also a question of a general increase in pollution, both from the air and from increased road traffic en route to and from the airport, then there's traffic congestion. The point really is that the infrastructure in the whole region is stressed and the traffic generated by more aircraft movements will increase that.

Agree.

It doesn't matter where you build an aiport, you will get complaints down the track.

Even Melbourne, which years ago built an airport way out in what was then paddocks
with a satellite town out further from it for those who wanted to live near it.

Well as everything has expanded, houses, infrastructure, businesses, traffic has become a nightmare and
on top of that, people who live under flight paths are complaining, yet the airport was there long before them.

Those that enthuse about enlarging Heathrow should be made to drive between Junction 10 and Junction 16 on the M25 in both directions at around 1700 hours Monday to Friday every day for a month.
That would guarantee an extra runway at Stansted or Gatwick.

I couldn't agree more. A couple of weeks ago it took me 2 hours to get from the Chertsey M25 onramp, to the M40 Westbound.I had allowed an hour, knowing that without traffic it's just over 20 minutes, but of course that never happens. No rain, nothing apparently wrong, just sheer volume of traffic, and that was at 1500 on a weekday afternoon. I feel sorry for the poor sods that have to do it regularly.

This whole Heathrow thing is madness.

Lack of pollies having the balls to make hard decisions a long time ago.

And of course it just gets worse and worse.

So now the latest 'cunning plan" is to build a sloping bridge over the motorway for the runway. 8-}

This real Alice in Wonderland stuff. A bad decision, followed by worse ones to try to vindicate the original. I don't know enough about flying big jets to comment on whether this is safe or practical, and I'm sure someone will soon be along to answer that, but intuitively it seems wrong to me.

If none of the challenges to LHR R3 succeed, the runway might be built by 2029. Above is a list of new non-stop destinations. I think someone is living in la-la land, smoking their socks, or just plain telling porky pies.

Even the mayor of London is now opposed to LHR R3.

Predict many years of dithering and challenges, whilst millions of pounds are wasted on 'consultative hearings' and 'consultants'.

Perhaps the guvmint are waiting for HS2 to be started - then they can add London (Birmingham) to London (Luton), London (Stansted)...

And so the saga continues

https://www.theguardian.com/environment ... ion-limits

What happens if the figures are 'fudged ' and then once a third runway is built it is found to 'break the rules ' so to speak? :-\

Hypothetical question I suspect. :)

It's all very well for the Guardian to make statements like this, but 'business leaders' ....... that might just be two, out of thousands!

This is the same as Komrad Jerzy Korbinski's grand manifesto for spending, where's the money going to come from? If he can pull it off without increasing taxation on the wealthy (i.e. influential and productive) in society, and thus getting them to find ways of minimising their tax payments, then he's hit on a magic formula that has eluded economists and politicians since time immemorial. In the meantime, he remains the Conservatives' greatest friend and ally as he continues to promote his 'Puff the Magic Dragon' theories.

Long may Komrad Korbinski live to wave the red flag!

'Puff the Magic Dragon' - like this one in action ? Not something a pacifist would support.

It seems that the Government is going ahead with the third runway at London Heathrow despite continuing opposition.
