Actually there was always a third runway at LHR. It was NE orientation. Used it a few times diverting due to strong cross winds at BZN. The RAF used to go crazy with me because of the cost. If you're trying to get the runway built then it's a perfectly valid argument. Not having the runway is a hard limit, agreeing to limit numbers is something that can be subject to creep later. Of course, the opponents know this, which is why they're trying to prevent it being built.

It's made me view things from a different perspective.

The Government should now get behind the reopening and development of Manston (Kent International), especially for freight operations.
Connections to the motorway network already exist and it is possible to build a rail connection.
In the meantime, get on with the second runway at Gatwick.
