London City Airport to go remote.

It seems that London City Airport is to be the first in the UK to have a remote tower, the controllers to be based at Swanwick.

The next step will be pilotless aircraft controlled from the ground. I'm not comfortable with the idea although I'm sure it's quite feasible.

LCY used to be a superb little airport but has become the victim of its own success and is now scruffy, overcrowded, overcommercialised, and with surly and unhelpful security staff. The once good public transport is unreliable and crowded and parking is expensive. I am all in favour of discouraging people from using their own cars but then there has to be a viable and comfortable option in place.

On two recent trips I used LGW for one and LCY for the other, and much preferred LGW. I suppose if the eastern side of London were anywhere near where I wanted to be, I would consider LCY, but it isn't, so I won't.

Agree with Capetonian on all points in his post above. I live closer to LCY so I would prefer it to LGW.

LCY/Thames Radar very accommodating on zone transits if you sound and look like you know what you are doing mind so I give them 10/10 for that. Have done it in a single but the legality of SEP over that area has not been tested and I wouldn't like to be the one to test the argument after landing in Victoria Park or the drink or whatever so now desist from single engine operation there.
