Re: Cricket
I must admit I fail Norman Tebbitt's 'cricket test'. Well done the Bokke!
My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.

A bit of sledging or battering!
Batters! For goodness sake what's wrong with batsmen or women.

There is no greater indignity in cricket than losing by an innings.
Equivalents in other sports are hard to come by, though one might imagine a football team still winning without a goalkeeper in the second half, or a sprinter claiming gold despite running backwards for the final 50 metres.
Needless to say, such a margin of victory implies a one-sided contest. You'll hear captains, coaches and commentators say something like: "They were better in every department."
And that is almost always true. But taking a closer look at England's chastening defeat by South Africa at Lord's - by an innings and 12 runs - and there is at least some room for optimism for the vanquished hosts. <<those who like stats read on>>

Re: Cricket
Well, England's poor batting performance in the last test means they change..... a bowler. Meanwhile, batting failure Crawley keeps his place in the team. They couldn't manage to come third in a two-horse race.
It's always my fault - SWMBO

I suspect it may be the only major sporting competition that we will win this year...Woody wrote: ↑Sun Nov 13, 2022 11:58 amI know it’s not proper cricket, but a win’s a win

From the WTF? department...

England 506 for 4 at the close of day ONE. Broke a few records there, did they smuggle in the T20 squad? Almost a run a ball.

It was over a run per ball as only 75 overs were bowled due to the light, but they’ve collapsed to 657 all out

Re: Cricket
No room for sentimentality in professional sports
Satisfying: Joe Root needed 150 not out or 200 and out in this innings to get his average back to 50. Ben Stokes declares when Joe Root hits six to move from 147 to 153, with his average 50.01.
