The current Mrs RiS grandfather's was a WWII veteran and fought in Northern Africa in the battle of El-Alamein with the then GRAF on one of its initial Squadron. He started his career as a mechanic but soon he become a pilot. He passed away last night at age 101. I didn't have a chance to meet him but from what I have heard he was a great man.

I am not sure why I am so touched by his death if it is for being Mrs. RiS grandfather of being a pilot but I wanted to share it here.

And talking of veterans here's another one...

Yvette Lundy: French Resistance member who survived Nazi camps dies at 103

Her brother Georges, who worked with her, died in a German concentration camp.

Another of 'The Few' passes.

Another of 'The Few' passes. A very special generation of heroes in every sense of the word. RIP Sir.

As another former 56 Sqn pilot, there will be extra poignancy when I lift a glass to him tonight.

With the exceptions of our parents and very few teachers, those veterans are the people to whom we own our freedom and so many more things.
