An excellent museum with one of the only 2 Lancasters in Oz

They aren't allowed to fly their lanc, but they do day and night engine runups and one is allowed very close. It's quite something. Being ex-RAF, I was invited into the restoration workshop and spent a pleasant hour sipping coffee and nattering with the engine techies.

Fox, I presume that is another one besides the flyable one.

Just Jane at East Kirkby is in strip rebuild with the intention to get it airworthy. When the Canadian one came over they staged a 3-ship, two airborne and one on ground run - 12 Merlins!

I went to that, when the PA announcer said the words “Ladies and Gentlemen 12 Merlins “ there wasn’t a dry eye in the house

Woody, I didn't but I have several photos if the pair over our house. Couldn't get them both in the frame complete. Very inconsiderate flying to low and close

When I were a youngster, and at BCBS Lindholme, 1954-6, I didn't ever think that I would look back and remember those morning take off's for the sounds.

I heard dozens of Merlins every day for 2½ years.

There were 4 on each Lincoln.

There is something about a piston coughing in to life. Taxying and slewing in to wind for run ups, firing up all the nav kit, checking it, then switching it off again.

All very strange getting into a jet, running all the kit on ground power, lighting the fire and breaks off.

Even stranger, Alison will remember, was the display scramble, sitting there, 28v on but no power sets running to create noise. Mass rapid start, breaks off, rolling and watching instruments coming to life hoping all 4 engines were burning and turning. Remember a Mk 1a lifting off on two, third just starting and fourth a little later.

The only times I ever called for and had 'Engine Runs', in attempts to reproduce snags was at Lindholme, usually on the Lincoln's.
If we Fairies asked for such, the Sooties almost fought each other for the job!

Things got so much smoother with jet engines.

We went to this one ten years ago https://www.hiller.org/ just off US-101 in the Bay Area. I remember them having the front end of an ex-BA 747 as part of the display.
