John you've made excellent progress on that - what a cracking project. I've had this book sitting in my bookshelf for the past 10 years almost, a cnc build is one of long term project aims. Always seems to be something else getting in the way. I'm well envious of your work.

Do you have a background in electronics or programming? I'm happy with the mechanical aspects but the programming would be a challenge for me - still plenty of help out their on the internet.

Re MDF, I know you will be on top of the hazards regarding the dust, I guess you'll have put a fair bit of thought into the extraction system. Keep posting updates, love to see it finished and working. Best of luck.

The Drummond is almost complete even the little wooden block travelling steady and the tool rest. Unfortunately the treadle mechanism has been lost but I still have the legs.

I understand that Myfords one way or another evolved from the Drummond.

I did not know that Myfords evolved from Drummonds! Mine has many non-original replacement parts, but suits my needs. A few years ago a fellow's 1899 de Dion Bouton broke part of its braking mechanism outside our yard while on the London-Brighton run, I think he was heading to or from luncheon at the RAC. He put it in the support vehicle's trailer, but came into the yard to ask directions and if we knew of anyone local with a lathe. I don't know of a single other lathe anywhere near, and probably not available on a weekend! Myford Junior to the rescue, journey resumed on the de Dion, driver could not believe his luck!

Drummonds had been making lathes for the Royal Navy and in WWI some of the field workshops had Drummonds too. When WWII came along the "Ministry of Who Makes What" had Myfords take over Drummond's production of small lathes while Drummonds were to concentrate on their heavier machine tools. (Errors and exceptions excepted!)

I do very little machining nowadays, but will be busy on my Myford fairly soon due to some new orders.
One of my products needed a slot cut in its frame for which I used the milling machine. The machine's manufacturer was "Balding", the model was "Beaver". Of course, it NEVER occurred to us to find any humour in these names, perish the thought!

I have a Milnes lathe from 1900 (+/- 10 years) that I am spending half an hour on every time I get to the museum where it is in the workshop. Today I pulled the saddle off and scraped out decades of dirt and grunge. I have not really decided what to do with it but it is looking like it may be usable again in which case it would stay in the museum workshop where I am sure there are a few people with the skills to make use of it.

I always seem to be busy in my workshop but I dont do any paying work out there.
