Reminds me of a Russian Ekranoplan (one of the smaller ones - not the original KM).

A friend of mine flies the Martin Mars for Coulson. They trained some Chinese crews, in the operation of large seaplanes using Hawai'i Mars, during the summer of 2017.

Built partly as antidote to this this Japanese aircraft, amongst other reasons, mostly to do with China's territorial aspirations in the South China Sea.

Many South Eastern Asian nations are keen to purchase the Japanese aircraft to counter Chinese territorial claims in the South China sea.

The Indian Navy has a requirement for 12–18 US-2 Amphibious Search and Rescue aircraft at a cost of $USD1.65 billion. It is expected that these amphibious aircraft will be stationed in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In October 2016, ShinMaywa reduced the price to around $USD 113 million per aircraft. There were expectations that a contract for the order would be signed in November 2016, but it was deferred by the Indian defence minister Manohar Parrikar. In March 2018, Japanese ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu told The Hindu Business Line that talks were still in progress.

There have also been reports that Thailand is interested in purchasing the aircraft.

Indonesia is another prospective customer.

It could access remote atolls in the South China Sea’s Spratly Islands, claimed by several bordering nations,[3] as the South China Sea is subjected to territorial disputes.[14] It can fly in four hours from the southern city of Sanya to James Shoal, the southernmost edge of China’s territorial claims.
