Ryanair new baggage rules

#1 Post by ian16th » Fri Nov 02, 2018 12:30 pm

Y'all must forgive me my ignorance. But residing in this southern colony I have never had the opportunity to partake of the pleasures of being a Ryanair customer/passenger/client/SLF or whatever the correct nomenclature is.

I have seen a lot of wordspeak in 'the meeja' about the new baggage limits on Ryanair, and being the sort of chap that I am, I took the trouble to look up Ryanair's web-page on the matter.

Now the questions.

Ryanair is well known for only flying B-737's, an a/c type that I have travelled on with many airlines, in many countries, many times. One thing that they all had in common was that they had overhead lockers. Are the B-737's that Ryanair purchased fitted with such?

On the web-page it states quite clearly that
All passengers are entitled to bring 1 small personal bag on board which must fit under the seat in front of you (40cm x 20cm x 25cm).
This 'must fit under the seat in front of you' has been a standard for hand baggage for many years. Though not usually strictly enforced.

What it does NOT SAY, is that this 10kg bag MUST BE STORED under the seat in front of you.
Therefore I assume that one can store said 10kg bag in the overhead locker.

So what is all of the 'correspondence' in 'the meega' about?

RYR's 737s are bog standard 737s. hat racks and all.
My understanding for what it's worth.
RYR say their aircraft can take 90 of their standard sized bags (specified) in the overhead. To use the overhead for your bag you now have to pay to be a "Priority" passenger otherwise your wheely goes in the hold.
All pax can put a small bag under the seat in front, NOT in the overhead, at the size you specified. This is quite a small bag. My COPD equipment is contained in exactly the right size.
SM couldn't get her toiletries in it.
Does that help ?

It all makes me happy that I've never been a customer of Mr O'leary, and I hope that I never need to.

Ryanair have quite reasonably decided to charge for CBBG over a certain size. I am in favour of that as it means that people who take up the most space and inconvenience others pay more. For the airline it's a revenue stream.

Personally I wouldn't ever fly with Ryanair but 100 million people a year do, and should understand and abide by the rules.

And those 100 million ensure some seat availability on real airlines when you book with them eh Cape? ;)))

I wouldn't insult myself by flying with a ratbag outfit like RYR and some other low cost class mobs. Rather take a Paki cab or a trash barge.

That's the upside of Ryanair, it keeps people off the airlines civilised people want to fly on, and it keeps the other airlines competitive. For that reason I am delighted that Ryanair exists as long as I never have to use them.

The downside is that it generates mass tourism to places that are rapidly becoming, or have become, spoilt due to overtourism of the wrong type of tourists, i.e. those at the bottom end of the market, aided and abetted by AirBnB and the likes.

Daughter has just booked a flight for next September to get back here for my 70th after attending an old friends 40th the day before in England.

Ryanair with "priority/plus" came to about £108 (Stansted -AGP) BA with cabin bag and hold bag £65 (LHR-AGP)

..... and who on earth wants to travel from Stansted? It's got to be one of the most awful experiences in Europe. Not too bad for arrivals but atrocious for departures. I have managed to avoid it for about 10 years and can only imagine it has got worse with the increasing numbers of the unwashed using it.

I would say that FR can be more than a viable solution. I used them once to treat a friend to day out in a city some 500 km from my place: it was cheaper to use them, we had no bags not even a back pack that I carry now and the ticket was much cheaper than the train. Actually the trains in my part of the world they have become too dirty, late and carry often people I 'd rather not socialising with.

So yes FR was an excellent alternative although the next trips were on a legacy carrier at a similar cost.

And finally some female pax can attract easily Slasher's or mine attention something does not happen to other airlines.

For the destinations I would post something later.

I have used RYR many times without complaint and will continue to do so.I understand and abide by the rules and do not reside in the dregs of society were some of you think that most RYR passengers come from.

FR,made possible for the great unwashed to travel by air. That can lead to some inconvenience difficult times for the decent people. Noise, bad B.O frequently render travel with FR unpleasant.

Regarding destination marketing and how they are ruined by large crowds of tourists (brought by FR or cruise ships) I blame the local businesses. The only thing I remember from Economics 101 is the supply and demand theoreme. Obviously greediness play a role but if you have too many customers do raise the price increase profit and move upmarket.

Obviously Cape would have plenty of comments about it and I am looking forward to read them.

Returned to Spain by train last week carrying three heavy cases. 07:55 Eurostar to Paris (2hrs20mns). Fish 'n chips for lunch at the Montreux in Gare de Nord, 14:07 TGV to Perpignan, (5hrs) seated upstairs munching on Pret a Manger snacks and trolley service at 299kph. Reconnected car battery, fired on first turn and drove home. Flying an option ? No.

Dead jealous I am!

Remember I am a veteran of travelling 2nd Class on the SNCF in the 50's.

The unit Land Rover to Miramas, a local train to Marseille, an 'express' overnight to Paris Gare de Lyon, the Metro or a taxi to the British Embassy to pick up a warrant, tazi or Mtro to Gare de Nord, another train to Calais, the ferry to Dover, the luxury of BR 3rd class to Victoria and then to wherever.

From Istres to Teesside was about 36 hours! Orange to Yatesbury was something less.

SNCF had those leather seats with a leather headrest and a wood back rest! As I said, when one got to Dover and BR, we thought it was luxury.

The new Eurostar trains, designed in Italy and built in Germany, are lightweight and feel it. Insufficient baggage storage for cattle class so it's better to race down the train to embark first. Standard Premier has so much wasted space for baggage and passengers it's unbelievable. WiFi is feeble and many apps such as WhatsApp are blocked so no point in it. New TGVs much better and good broadband, could listen to the afternoon play on Radio 4 TuneIn with no problems. Comfortable.
