My first thought was 'of course, where else?'

Ric, assuming over 8 hours bottle to throttle, how much would get you over the fly drive limit?

Are these random tests? Who decides they need testing?

PN it depends on the individual. Some folk absorb alcohol faster than others. The 8 hr rule is of course only a guideline. Reading news reports it is usually another member of crew who calls the police but I think that they also do random testing these days. It also depends what you have drunk the night before. Cognac hangs on the breath. I flew para dropping after a dinner party and was reported for smelling of alcohol. I was completely legal. Dunno what he was bothered about anyway, he was the one with the parachute, not me.

I know there are so many variables but a pint of beer drink over 3 hours will generally show below an English limit. What sort of consumption, as a rule of thumb,be under the Scottish pilot limit?

Looking at limits, 80 in England and 50 in Scotland or 25 if you are a pilot.

General clear one unit per hour. 4 pints of beer 8 hours before show time should see you clear. Five might nudge that 25. Add in a little Scotch from the mini bar.

Now personally, at their age, if I hit 4 pints my resistance to a 5th would have been low.

It would seem they might have had a bit more than a sociable pint or glass of wine.

Expect to see more testing in the future in Europe. EASA have made Drug and Alcohol Awareness policies mandatory in all AOC companies, effective Aug 2020. So expect to be breath tested during SAFA (aka ramp) checks. Companies will have to have a programme of monitoring D&A (ab)use as well as support programmes.

The only reason to parachute out of an aeroplane is if it is on fire.

Canadian training, French student, night solo cross country in a Harvard, "temporarily uncertain of his position" over black countryside, Wintertime. Opened the canopy, started to climb out then realised that it was, dark, cold, snow covered Canadian terrain, so climbed back in again and closed the canopy. Eventually saw some lights, found his way home. QED.

I jumped out once, but I was a young, foolish student. At least I've ticked it off my bucket list.

I jumped out three times and I will do it again if money is available.

I would do it again if it was likely to result in a softer landing than remaining in the aircraft.

Loftleider flight, Glasgow to Reykjavik was held for us at the ramp. Shacklebus trundles up next door, out comes pilot in immersion suit, life jacket, bone dome, parachute and all.
