Received notice from a friend at Tokyo University, who was due in the UK later this month, that he has been informed by his faculty head that they would rather he did not travel due to the virus. He is scurrying around trying to reclaim ticket costs less cancellation fees.

This situation is going to drive many of the smaller/marginal airlines to the wall. The only aviation sector that seems to be benefiting is the jet charter business.
Drastic cuts in scheduled airline services in response to the COVID-19 virus outbreak and concern about public health risks spurred a significant surge in demand for private jet charter flights beginning in late January. However, restrictions on travel to some countries and concerns over risks to passengers and crew have meant that operators have had limited opportunity to capitalize on the situation.

Some operators have experienced difficulties in getting spare parts for aircraft. Operators have also been implementing measures to protect passengers and crew, including increased disinfection procedures. In some cases, flight departments are canceling trips in response to business travel bans imposed by their companies.

Squeezyjet just today cancelled lunchtime Edi-Lgw flight 31st March without explanation. Luckily I was on the computer, got the e-mail and was able to grab a no-charge flight change to the later flight.

Coronavirus was the last straw for Flybe, it's been teetering on the brink for years, its problems have worsened in the last few months and a drop in traffic pushed it over the edge.

Flybe paid my mortgage for 8 years, the sad day today has nothing to do with coronavirus, the simple fact is that truly awful management and bad decisions over the past decade have led to this, the incompetent French lady tried to blame Brexit, fuel prices and so on, but really they bought the wrong aircraft for their business.
Why they bought the brand new wrong aircraft is something that only the aircraft manufacturer and the MD at the time can answer.
Lots of friends will be shocked this morning, nothing else down in Devon, fingers crossed that the engineering will be bought by someone (Bombardier?) and keep going, someone will fly the routes and they will need pilots, so hopefully it will sort itself out, I read this morning that 81% of Belfast flights are Flybe.

I lay awake last night thinking of all the operators that had their aircraft maintained by Westcountry Aircraft Services/JEA/FAS, Channel Express, Emerald, Euroair, Air Europe, Titan, Capital, Streamline, TNT, Ratioflug, Farnair, Gill, Kel Air, BAe Systems, Arkia, Janus, plus many more, bit of an end of an era unfortunately.

As if Alitalia haven’t got enough problems.
Alitalia has announced that it will suspend all flights to and from Milan’s Malpensa Airport, effective Monday.

Futhermore, Italy’ flag-carrier is reducing flights from other cities in Northern Italy. From Milan’s regional airport Linate, the carrier will only serve domestic routes.

This latest development in Milan comes after the Italian government put the Lombardy region, which includes Milan, on lockdown, due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Many airlines have already reduced or fully suspended flights to northern Italy to avoid the risk of further spreading the virus and the Covid-19 disease, which first originated in Wuhan, China. Some governments have introduced strict travel restrictions for affected countries like Italy.

Carriers that have fully suspended their Milan services include American Airlines, Delta, SAS Scandinavian, Turkish Airlines and Singapore Airlines.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

El Al Israel Airlines is planning to make cuts to its workforce and flight operations as new travel regulations amid the Coronavirus crisis restrict travel to Israel and virtually eliminate tourism.

The carrier is putting 80 percent of its employees on unpaid leave for an indefinite period of time, effective next week. According to an internal memo seen by Israeli media, this will affect workers from all areas, including management. El Al’s plan sees only 1,000 of 6,000+ employees, including 120 of 600+ pilots, remaining with the airline for the time being. Those who stay would reportedly accept a 20 percent salary reduction.

This comes after the government of Israel announced on Monday, that all individuals arriving in the country must self-quarantine for 14 days to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, also known as Covid-19. Such an entry restriction makes international travel and tourism essentially impossible. Most travellers have therefore cancelled their plans, and the demand for new bookings is almost non-existent.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Just heard that Trump is cutting all flights between the US and Europe. Demand for aviation people is going to reduce substantially. Now if he can be persuaded to maintain the ban once the virus is over, we will all benefit.

For some reason he's still letting people in from from the UK. I wonder if his golf course in Scotland has some important events on in the coming weeks with a high US attendance?

If there's an Ops-Normal sweepstake on which airline is next to go tits up: I'll bet a Dollar to a Noggie Krone on it being 'Norwegian'.

I'll also bet a Pound to a Lira on the next again one being WopItalia.

Proceeds of winnings and losings will go to an appropriate medical charity.

But, The Irish Republic is; and their citizens and flights are still allowed in.

There's zero logic to it. And what about CI, IoM, etc, which are not UK, EU, or Schengen?

Presumably we should bar all flights from the US?

Interesting is that suggestion UP. Which Norwegian? They have several airlines registered in different counties. There have been recent transfers of flying metal between them, particularly into the Norwegian Air Sweden from International.
I think, if they have to, they will only close one.

I thought a “Noggie Kroner” was the Icelandic unit of currency. For those of us old enough to recall the black&white BBC TV series the ‘Legends of Noggin the Nog’?

But then maybe we’re not allowed to say the word any more.

Oops, there’s the doorbell again......
