If this corporate mentality can persist in the face of Max and the lowest aviation fuel prices in decades, what hope is there for the future of US commercial aviation??

Totally bizarre. What a bunch of management morons. They clearly haven't updated their computer seating algorithms and are now slaves to a mindless machine...

Surely if they let an imaginative member of the cabin crew allocate all 11 seats the might actually please some people, weight and balance issues aside...

Saves on cleaning, if you only have three rows occupied then it's less work for the crew after the flight.

I once travelled on an airliner which was not fully occupied.
It was the days before allocated seats, but the front three rows were kept empty.

I vaguely remember travelling on a flight where we were free to move around once the seatbelt sign went off but the front rows were off limits. I don't remember there being posh seats up front, either.

I remember the old days when we used DC-3s to fly from Furryboots to Sumburgh and from Cairo to the Eastern Desert.

When boarding, (the door was at the back of the aircraft), the hostie was always insistent that we fill the rear seats first. Reason being: if pax went to the front first, the thing would tip onto its nose.

Back in 2006 I boarded a 733 and saw the first rows of economy were completely empty and then all the other rows where fully used. Talk about trim.
