Pakistani pilots grounded over 'fake licences'

#1 Post by Alisoncc » Thu Jun 25, 2020 6:53 pm

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has grounded 150 pilots over claims they may not hold a valid licence.

Pakistan's aviation minister told parliament on Wednesday that a large number of commercial pilots hold fake licences or cheated in exams.

It comes as an initial report into a PIA crash that killed 97 people last month found the cause to be human error by the pilot and air traffic control.

Pakistan has a chequered aviation safety record with a number of crashes.

Aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan shared the findings of an initial report into May's crash on Wednesday, but also referred to a wider government probe, which had been launched after a different crash.

Following the 2018 crash, it was discovered that the test date on the pilot's licence was a public holiday, suggesting that testing could not have taken place on that day.

Mr Khan said investigations had found that more than 260 of the country's 860 active pilots had either fake licences or had cheated in their exams.

A PIA spokesman confirmed to AFP news agency that the probe found about 150 of its 434 pilots had "either bogus or suspicious licences".

"We have decided to ground those 150 pilots with bogus licences with immediate effect," he said.

Just under 1 in 3 licences are fraudulent? Extraordinary!

150/434 of the PIA pilots so rather more than 33%

I was referring to the active pilot numbers...looking at how pervasive the problem is generally.

I know, but knowing the PIA rate is higher you would have a one in three chance flying single pilot. I wonder which one was qualified.

and it wouldn't take much of a calculation to work out the odds of BOTH the occupants of row 0 not having a valid licence???

1 in 9??

It's been like this for years.

India is better, but not perfect.

When I joined 'a certain Indian Airline', one guy was dumped as a total fraud. He didnt fly, but he nearly did.

Another guy joined as a Captain, but as time went by, we realised he'd never flown the type before- although he may have run a sim of it. The F/Os taught him.

India, Pakistan and quite a few other places......are different.

I doubt if many on here have flown with PIA. As mentioned on another thread, I worked for them for several years and one thing which has remained in my memory is that every flight would commence with a prayer read by the captain. This may happen on other islamic carriers too, although I've travelled with a few over the years and never been aware of it.
Now, given the divine belief which is instilled in their citizens, it would not surprise me to learn that those who hold false licences believe that Allah will guide them; especially when they are operating closer to him than ordinary mortals do. However, if Allah is busy preparing his Biryani to celebrate the end of Ramadan, when the accident took place, then the link is broken...

I hear many Indian doctors are as well qualified as Pakistani pilots.
