Strike at Lufthansa

Lufthansa cancels nearly all flights in Germany on Wednesday, impacting 134,000 passengers

(CNN) — Lufthansa announced the cancellation of nearly all flights in Germany on Wednesday due to strike action, the company said in a press release Tuesday.
Given that a strike of ground staff by trade union Ver.di will have "a massive operational impact in the middle of the peak travel season," the airline said it "has to cancel almost the entire flight schedule at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for Wednesday."
With the summer holiday season underway, the airline said it was already working under high pressure to reestablish flight schedules for this weekend, following previous strikes. Wednesday's strike may still lead to individual flight cancellations or delays on Thursday and Friday, Lufthansa warned.
At Frankfurt airport, a total of 678 flights will be canceled, 32 of them on Tuesday and 646 on Wednesday, according to Lufthansa. An estimated 92,000 passengers will be affected.
At the Munich hub, a total of 345 flights will have to be canceled, including 15 on Tuesday and 330 on Wednesday. An estimated 42,000 passengers will be affected, Lufthansa said.

Lufthansa, which is Germany's flag carrier, added that rebooking capacities for passengers affected by cancellations are very limited.
The union Ver.di is calling for a 9.5% wage increase for Lufthansa ground staff, with a minimum increase of €350 ($368) per month for 12 months. Staff are overworked due to significant staff shortages, high inflation and a three-year wage freeze, the union said.
Michael Niggemann, chief human resources officer and labor director at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, told journalists Tuesday that the strikes were "causing enormous damage."
Lufthansa had offered "very substantial pay increases over the next 12 months," he said, adding that the strike action "is simply no longer proportionate."
The strike is due to start at 3:45 a.m. local time (9:45 p.m. ET) on Wednesday and end at 6 a.m. local time (midnight ET) on Thursday, the union said in a statement.

...just you, then, Woody ;)))

Smart move. You'll get the raise anyway, and get paid during the strike!

In my 20+ years at BA , I’ve been on strike for one hour, which was the infamous Gate Gourmet walkout of 2005, except that we’d already trapped off home and the next day was a late shift, question was “ Are you prepared to work your normal shift “ answered yes and that was my total number of hours that someone decided that I was unavailable :-o

In 11 years in teaching, I never joined a union, never went on strike, and always got paid more than everyone else.
From which I concluded that unions aren't very good at negotiating.

I wonder if it's still done like this?

Lufthansa pilots vote in favor of industrial action, paving the way for a strike
The vote by Germany's pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit comes days after the carrier's ground staff went on strike, prompting over 1,000 flights to be canceled.

Members of Germany's pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) on Sunday overwhelmingly voted in favor of industrial action, paving the way for a strike at Lufthansa.

The vote comes days after the carrier's ground staff went on strike, prompting over 1,000 flights to be canceled.

The vote does not necessarily mean a strike will be held, but it was a signal to the employer that constructive steps needed to be taken, Vereinigung Cockpit board member Marcel Groels said.

"We now need a modern and fair internationally competitive compensation structure in all occupational groups," Groels said.

The union said 97.6% of the pilots who participated in the ballot opted for industrial action. The move threatens further disurption during the peak summer travel season.

What is the pilots' union demanding?
VC is demanding a 5.5% pay rise this year for its pilots along with automatic inflation compensation factored in. The union also wants uniform pay structures for all staff members belonging to the Lufthansa group's airlines, which include flagship carrier Lufthansa and budget airline Eurowings.

This past week's ground staff strike affected around 134,000 passengers and caused ripple effects for other airlines reliant on Lufthansa ground crew that assist with their flights.

A spokesperson for Lufthansa told Reuters news agency that they respected the results of the vote and hoped for a constructive solution at the negotiating table.
