Fire Fighting Drills

This year our company decided to splash the cash and head to a fire station & training complex in Sintra just outside of Lisbon. Finally, training worth doing. They used flammable gel and real fire extinguishers. We had to put out an oven fire and a waste bin in the lav fire. Excellent stuff. Then we watched how smoke forms up in the ceiling and how easier it is to duck under and get out. Finally was a variety of fires that we had to put out. Great fun. Then the finale was how effective foam is at putting out kero fires. They did that one.

Well worth it. All training should be that effective.

Last fire drills, with due environmental concerns, was an absolute farce. We were 20 miles from our Fire Section so they brought their kit to us. It was a large metal tray which they then filled with water. They lit a gas burner and flames erupted from the water.

We then applied CO2 and miraculously the flames were extinguished (as the fireman turned the gas off). Then this was repeated with foam. Guess what, the flames went out too.

They used to burn aircraft, break in, rescue a dummy, and put out the fire. Now it is a solid steel plate DC10 shape with gas burners.
