51 bucks for a 5km trip? I'd've paid the driver $30 tops and told him to go to buggery! 
The driver gave him a 20 - a virtual admission he overcharged him.
Assuming the article is correct the mistake the ripoffee made was slapping the ripoffer. Shouldn't have touched him. Probably all could've been settled out of court. Or take pics of the taxi with rego and driver's name, then report it to the cops stating he was overcharged.

I got ripped off in Nice, bought a part share in a taxi from the airport to an hotel along the promenade. At least it went on expenses.
SWMBO was similarly ripped off in Naples 50,000 l for a short hope. Later she allowed this man to take her into his house to see his cameos - Yes seriously. Fortunately his mother was there and gave us make cameos. She went back the next day to pick up ones of our daughters that he had made.
