AOPA is reporting that hundreds of pilots may have to take their practical tests over again after in FAA investigation

Do examiners carry insurance for such an eventuality?

The probability is that the FAA is running short of the old time experienced guys due to retirement. The old guys were a canny bunch knowing exactly when to not notice things or when to come down like a ton of bricks.

I've heard that due to the shortage of DPEs, check rides are very a lucrative business. The father of my daughter's friend works administratively at a flight school and urged me to pursue getting a DPE slot after retirement. I didn't really want to deal with the FAA bureaucracy as I have enough trouble renewing my CFI every two years.
