Flying Legends cancelled at Duxford for good!

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Tue Aug 25, 2020 4:14 pm

Today, the Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford announced it would be cancelling the hugely-popular Flying Legends airshow for good.

Citing issues from the coronavirus pandemic, IWM Duxford - a non-profit charity - said the decision had been made to maximise income and remain financially stable.

The Flying Legends show, which features World War-era planes was previously described as the "best classic aviation event in the world".

The event will now look for another venue for future air shows.

The annual airshow scheduled on July 11 and 12 this year had already been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the announcement that it would never again be hosted at IWM Duxford shocked fans on social media, with many expressing their disappointment at the news.

Nick Grey, an organiser of the airshow, said it was with a "heavy heart" that he confirmed the change.

"We truly hope that our team will find an alternative location to welcome this iconic event and that we will have the privilege of seeing you all again," he said on Facebook.

Shame - Duxford always has been the logical place for them with the museum. Hope there is nothing more sinister behind the announcement.

I'm astonished and don't understand.

Duxford is the logical place for that event and must surely have been a massive moneyspinner for them. It's also got more expertise in one place than the rest of the country put together.

I shall miss the challenge of arriving at the edge of the zone within a second of my allotted slot time. I traditionally chip in a quid to the RAFBF for every second I'm early or late. On a 295 trackmile flight it's a fun challenge.

Internal politics of some sort I'd be bound. Now't so strange as folk.

The wording would seem to indicate a humongous falling out.

To the enthusiast it would seem to be the ideal location.

It is and it is inconceivable that that Duxford weren't making money out of hosting this wonderful airshow.

Hopefully, Kemble will offer to host Flying Legends. It is much closer to me than Duxford.

Has Kemble the capacity to get crowds in and out?

Not ideal by any means. Just the Malmesbury-Cirencester road and a small station entrance. 'Twould be chaos and would need mucho dosh.

If, for CV19 reasons, then fair enough.

If for other reasons, then let's see 'em.

It is with great sadness that we have taken the decision to cancel the Duxford Battle of Britain Proms and the 80th Anniversary Battle of Britain Air Show 2020. We were looking forward to the Air Show as much as the thousands of visitors who had bought tickets for what promised to be a brilliant weekend.
We have been working tirelessly with our partners including Public Health England and South Cambridgeshire District Council in order to explore all avenues for hosting the event. However, we take our responsibility for the safety of our visitors and local community very seriously and feel it would be irresponsible to continue with the event in this rapidly-changing climate.
We are devastated to have to take this decision, and want to thank our visitors, supporters, partners neighbours and staff members for their incredible support over the past few days and weeks. IWM, like many other museums across the country, is under significant financial pressure due to the coronavirus pandemic so it is a huge blow to have to cancel one of our biggest events less than a week before it takes place. We are confident that our visitors, partners and supporters understand we would not have taken lightly a decision of this magnitude.
We are hugely sorry about the disruption that this cancellation will cause for everyone.
