.North Korea’s first spy satellite launch has ended in failure after its second stage malfunctioned, sending the projectile plunging into the sea, the country’s state media has said, with the regime vowing to conduct another launch soon.
The launch sparked emergency warnings on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa and in the South Korean capital Seoul, where the city briefly issued an evacuation warning in error. Both alerts were later lifted.
The new Chollima-1 satellite launch rocket failed due to instability in the engine and fuel system, the official KCNA news agency said, adding that officials were working to verify the “grave defects” that caused the rocket to malfunction

Spy satellite, my @rse.
There'll be an EMP nuke in each one once he gets them working.

The Japanese have threatened to shoot any North Korean "satellite" that traverses their territory down.
I would imagine that the Japanese are just a few screw turns away from a viable thermonuclear weapon if they have to.

With what?
Not that they would, anyway.
Nor does Yung Fat Wun intend hitting Japan (it would affect his big screen TV, the only piece of digital electronics in DPRK) - two over the US and one over Europe will work just fine.

Unlikely, as you say, but theoretically possible for objects in LEO if push came to shove.Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 8:29 amWith what?

The preparations include sending Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) ground-based missile-defense batteries to parts of Okinawa, as well as deploying Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyers — which are equipped with SM-3 interceptors — to waters around Japan.
The MSDF’s SM-3-equipped Aegis destroyers are designed to shoot down ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, while the PAC-3 systems — which have a range of 30 kilometers — are used to intercept missiles that evade the SM-3 layer and are seen as the last line of defense.

"Shoot a satellite down" ? That's media speak. Damage sensors with a laser or proton beam, maybe, but deorbiting it takes rather more.

There are multiple examples of satellites being destroyed, by rockets or missiles, without the use of lasers or proton beams while in LEO (although such exotic beam based weapons have been tested as well).
See the US, Russian and Chinese examples of LEO "shootdowns" here. The Isrealis and the Japanese definitely have weapon systems that can do the same.

The US also demonstrated an air launched "shoot down".
