13 minutes to the Moon..

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Mon Apr 13, 2020 12:51 pm

Have been listening to this series on the BBC World Service in tribute to the astronauts of Apollo 13, 50 years after their extraordinary escape from death...

13 Minutes to the Moon...

Highly recommended....

Should be available worldwide too.

"herky jerky ride"

Pogo oscillation...
If the oscillation is left unchecked, failures can result. One case occurred in the middle J-2 engine of the second stage, S-II, of the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970. In this case, the engine shut down before the oscillations could cause damage to the vehicle. Later events in this mission (an oxygen tank exploded two days later) overshadowed the pogo problem. Pogo also had been experienced in the S-IC first stage of the unmanned Apollo 6 test flight in 1968. One of the Soviet Union's N1-L3 rocket test flights suffered pogo oscillations in the first stage on February 21, 1969. The launch vehicle reached initial engine cutoff, but exploded 107 seconds after liftoff and disintegrated. There are other cases during unmanned launches in the 1950s and 1960s where the pogo effect caused catastrophic launch failures.

Thanks for that heads-up, TGG. Despite my knowing everything about space travel (people ARE surprised how much I know) I did actually pick up some very minor information listening to the podcast. =))

Amazing story.

It is Boac and I am glad you enjoyed it. :-bd

As for you knowing something about everything , or even everything about something, I am not in the least surprised but I am surprised by how little some others seem to know about anything! =))

Part of my early career involved analysis of failures of prototype components.
The major problem was deciding when you had collected all the evidence and making an analysis therefrom - there was always the possibility that you had missed a crucial piece of evidence which might sway the cause - or at least the sequence of the failure.

The test was being able to reproduce the failure.

I'd like to thank you so much for that link to the Apollo 13 podcast series.

For the past coupla days I've been fencing a 23 acre field, with earbuds listening to the entire series on my 'phone as I worked.

Great stuff.

In return, I proffer a similarly brilliant podcast from the same stable, whose discovery I also owe to you.

In early summer of 1971 I visited Western Norway. At the time the local gossip was of a mysterious death of a strange woman in strange circumstances. She was known as Isdalskvinnen.

There were many theories flying around at the time. A favourite, though not of mine, was that she had been a Soviet spy.

My own preferred theory at the time was that she was a Mossad sub-contractor, working as a messenger or courier in an operation to nab techie info on the then quite revolutionary Pingvin missile which was being developed and tested there at the time.

The podcasts are here.

They have investigated and reported to an extraordinary extent and they found a huge amount of info which was not available back then to those of us who gossiped and drank around the camp fire in the mountains of Sogne og Fjordane and Sunnmøre in that lovely summer.

Enjoy.

Re: 13 minutes to the Moon - the Australian role

#15 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Sat Apr 18, 2020 2:21 am

I hadn't appreciated what an important role the Australians played in saving the Apollo 13 mission...

The little-known role Australia played in the mission to land on the moon
There was recognition in the Australian parliament when senator Ken Anderson reported the efforts of his compatriots to the nation, while Dale Call, the network director of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, offered his personal thanks “for the outstanding support provided by Honeysuckle … which contributed to the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew”. And praise also came from the very top.

US president Richard Nixon sent a personal letter to Australian prime minister John Gorton offering “the people of Australia my deep appreciation for your nations’ assistance”. He conveyed his “personal thanks to all of your people who worked so hard to maintain our communications with the weakened spacecraft as it returned to Earth”. Kraft would later describe Australia’s role as “unique and critical”. And, of perhaps greater reward to the people working at Honeysuckle Creek, Swigert visited them personally the month after he returned from space to offer his thanks.

“So much had to come together to ensure Apollo 13 came home,” says Doug Millard, senior space curator at London’s Science Museum. “And it was the sheer will and team effort of people pulling together to find a solution to everything. But without communications everything would have failed and the Australian team solved that. And their input should not be underplayed, although their story doesn’t get the recognition that perhaps it should.”
