I am sure that Russia is not much impressed by the head of the UK’s space directorate and may be apt to point out the incongruity of having an air vice-marshal heading up a so called 'pacific' space organisation (what a portentous title for an organisation in a nation that hasn't inserted anything into orbit using it own technology for decades) but the hypocrisy of the US complaints can only be summed up by the Boeing X-37.Russia has been accused by UK officials of threatening “the peaceful use of space” after launching a projectile “with the characteristics of a weapon” during a satellite test.
It is the first time the Ministry of Defence has called out Russian activity of this sort.
The head of the UK’s space directorate, air vice-marshal Harvey Smyth, said: “We are concerned by the manner in which Russia tested one of its satellites by launching a projectile with the characteristics of a weapon.
“Actions of this kind threaten the peaceful use of space and risk causing debris that could pose a threat to satellites and the space systems on which the world depends.
Surely a rocket by definition is a "projectile with the characteristics of a weapon"? Such grandstanding just makes Britain look ludicrous and it does nothing to deter all actors, including the USA, Russia, China and India, from escalating a dangerous weapons race in space.
