Should have been a train driver......

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix » Wed Nov 07, 2018 12:56 pm

...if this graph by the National Careers Service UK is anything to go by! So helicopter pilots have an average top salary of about £40,000 do they? Let's see....I'm guessing I was probably earning that in around 1988, some 30 years ago.

I was told last year by a mate still flying on the North Sea that Senior Helicopter Captains were now on about £125,000 a year. I think EMS/Police pilots are currently on about half that - where do they get a top salary of £40,000 from? I suppose the graph producers are the people advising kids on what career to choose! [-X

It looks like utter bollocks to me.

Frinstance, it ignores the fact that many helicopter pilots work for Class 7 AOC Public Transport outfits, ie airlines.

The figure for HGV drivers is also bollocks. The going rate is £34k - £36k for the artic drivers who work for the three big supermarkets, another 5-10 for the trans-continental guys. Plus perks that they don't talk about.

I doubt a junior F/O with pukey Ryanscare makes 140,000 quid a year.

I expect he pays them to fly....

It is a range of salary graph though, with the lowest airline salary supposedly around £18,000 according to the graph.

I wanted to be a train driver when I was about 6 years old and my mother said I would get over such a stupid idea when I grew up and now that I am in my 50's I want to be a helicopter pilot and I guess she would, if she was still around, still say the same thing! :)

All I can say about the helicopter pilots that I have met to date (OK not a large number to be honest) is that they all seem to enjoy their jobs enormously and that does count for a digit or two on the pay cheque doesn't it? Point me to any very happy airline pilot at the moment!

Slash, you make me laugh and then blush. =)) :-bd

Hopefully the money saved by not drinking will help pay for the little chopper (as Ex-Ascot so evilly puts it) better suited to my current modest skillset! ;)))

The amount I have already pissed away in alcohol over my misspent life would certainly pay for the PPL-H and more beside I am sure.
