Job for a rescue helicopter surely?

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Mon Oct 28, 2019 1:04 pm

Fire chiefs have made an urgent public appeal for a high-rise cherry picker to help rescue a man stuck upside down more than 80 metres (270ft) up a chimney.
Footage from the scene appears to show a figure, upside down with his legs in the air, at the top of Dixon’s Chimney in Carlisle, Cumbria.

A cherry picker, or aerial work platform, has been called for by Cumbria fire and rescue service to help get the man down safely. A coastguard helicopter has been hovering close to the chimney top with police, fire and ambulance services on the scene below.

just goes on to show that carlisle city council needs to be more resourceful when it comes to handling emergencies like this
What a pillock!

Looking at later reports it seems the Coastguard crew were concerned the downdrafts would worsen the situation. It would also be difficult to get a man hanging upside down and entangled on that ladder into a harness. Pity Fred Dibnah is no longer with us - he'd have sorted it!

The crane has arrived but the man has been quiet for several hours......

Poor guy is probably a goner and the cherry picker (if it is actually able to reach that high) will be used for a body recovery.

I was wondering if they could have used a helicopter with a long line and a mountain specialist to get to him like they do on very steep faces in places like Scotland and the Alps but as you note it is clear that this was a very precarious situation?

Update- Apparently he is may still be alive...
"A helicopter has been used to try to rescue the man and efforts have been made to try to drop a technical rescue team on to the chimney to rescue him.

"These two attempts have not been successful so far due to concerns over how securely the man is attached to the ladder at the top of the chimney - and the potential danger of backdrafts from the helicopter.

"These concerns over how securely he is attached have also prevented us from sending someone up the ladder from the bottom. The ladder is also damaged.
