Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
Six people out of the 8 on board were injured as a result of the hard landing of this Mi-26 helicopter. Most odd - there seems to be no attempt to arrest what seems until the last second or so a reasonable rate of descent and the tail boom breaks off on impact at the point where it attaches to the rest of the fuselage. The cause does not seem to be a tail rotor strike.

Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
Vortex ring state just before he entered ground effect? Insufficient altitude to recover?
Or at MGW, small power margin and overpitch? Settling with power.
Apparently one of the passengers broke his back due to the high vertical descent rate.

https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/235497Accident on landing. Chopped tail then MRB ground strike.
Tail struck the ground first then.... over pitch...

Translation from a Russian report.

The incident occurred earlier on that day, April 25, near the Russkoye field. The helicopter belongs to Abakan Avia Airlines, it followed from the village of Urengoy to the Vankor field in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
According to preliminary data, the ship fell into a swirling stream. Also among the possible causes of the accident is the failure of the left engine, writes TASS.
On board the helicopter were five passengers and three crew members. Seven people were injured, REN TV writes. It is known that one of the crew members has serious injuries, the condition of the remaining victims is not reported. All eight people will be hospitalized on board the sanitation in the New Urengoy Central City Hospital.

Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
Having overnighted in several Russian hospitals outside the major cities, not because I was ill, but because there was nowhere else to stay, I wish those who were injured the very best of luck.
Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
It looks to me as though the rate of descent increased in the last 50ft or so. I wonder what the single engine performance of the Mil 26 is, if he had lost or had an engine run down. He was past LDP if they operate to those criteria but committed to landing on what? - an area of snowy ground which may have given difficult height perception - or to a hover? If just operating like a military aircraft my money's on a lack of power from one engine to arrest that rate of descent.
As GG has posted Also among the possible causes of the accident is the failure of the left engine, writes TASS.

Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
I agree with FD2's assessment of the increased ROD in the last 50ft or so - possibly an engine failure past LDP as he says. I still stick by my initial reaction to the video in that there was no tail or tail rotor strike before the increased ROD caused the tail boom to fracture at its attachment point to the main fuselage.
I know that the Aviation Safety Network page definitively states "Chopped tail then MRB ground strike" but all the contributions to ASN in respect of the accident are from Aerossurance who are an aviation consultancy based in Aberdeen and their statement of the accident cause is down to as much supposition as mine as we only have the video to go on and no accident investigation has yet started, let alone come out with a report.

I guess, like the insurance folks, we are all speculating at the moment. All my comments should be proceeded by a metaphorical question mark as I was reporting what has been gleaned from the Russian commentaries in the press, and we all know how reliable the press can be!CharlieOneSix wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 9:44 pmI agree with FD2's assessment of the increased ROD in the last 50ft or so - possibly an engine failure past LDP as he says. Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
I agree with C16 - it looks as though the whole tail pylon broke off when the main wheels hit the ground. I can't see the main rotor blades hitting anything before they thrash themselves to death on the ground. Not just a little late on the flare, but no real flare at all!

So it was a' Lord Grant Me More Power' moment as the angle of attack on the blades rose, close to and above the stall as one perverse turbine died...

Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
My simple assessment is it crashed.
Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
There looked to be abnormal blade coning so it could be that a vortex ring state developed which would explain why the heli dropped quickly from about 50ft.Adding more power at that point would have only made the situation worse.
Re: Mi-26 accident in Russia (video)
I don't think there was a high enough rate of descent combined with low airspeed for vortex ring to occur. The final stage of the descent was stable as well.
