Jeez that was lucky. It should fly again as long as everything's still in alignment. There might be a court martial when the facts come out , but they can thank their lucky stars they were in a Chinook and not something lighter and, as the report points out, they weren't flying a little lower. They got to walk away.

Nah, They were brave, Daily Wail says, so they should get medals.

The brave crew of an RAF Chinook helicopter are lucky to be alive after hitting countryside power lines on a war games exercise.

Looking at the severity of the strike marks I would guess that they hit a 33kv line - in which case they are extremely lucky. Many years ago I was in a smaller helicopter (Bo105) that went through a thinner 11kv line and although it was the tail and main rotors that struck them the damage was much less. If we had hit a 33kv line I wouldn't be here to tell the tale.

It wasn't unknown to be awarded an AFC for landing a damaged a/c.

Mind you, the AFC is now more of a gallantry medal than for 'airmanship'.

Nice of the locals to give them some practice for what's next:

Could that be the offending powerlines in the background of the second of TGG's photo? Not very high at all.

Reminds me of the Red Arrows Hawk which tangled with an electricity cable up in Scotland resulting in the engineer in the back-seat deciding it was time to part company with the jet. XX227 if any one is interested - I had to raise the write-off paperwork for the incident, quite an eye-watering amount it was.
