Dennis Kenyon RIP

I was very sad to learn that Dennis died yesterday in Herefordshire after a short illness. He was 88. The helicopter displays that Dennis did were legendary and there were times when I had to look away during his Enstrom displays as I couldn't believe what he was doing was survivable!

A lovely man who sadly lost his pilot son in a helicopter accident due to mechanical failure. Dennis then set up a scholarship fund in memory of his son so that young aspiring helicopter pilots could learn to fly. I knew him when we were both based at Shoreham, albeit in different businesses. At that time he lived close to the airfield and he threw some good parties there! The short video below is part of a display at Shoreham.

I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Kenyon display at North Weald some two years before he finally hung up his goggles (he was in his 70's then) and must say it was the most extraordinarily skilful flying display I have ever seen. I had a chat with him afterwards and found him to be delighted that people were enjoying watching what he enjoyed doing so well. No airs and graces, down to earth and prepared to talk, even to nincompoops like me.

It certainly takes a lot more skill than I have to fly like that voluntarily although I am now confident (deluded perhaps) to say that I can now perform most of the basic stuff pretty competently.

In his 80's... he certainly looked a lot younger than his years.

A really good bloke to know, and a truly exemplary pilot of wingswotfling.

I never met him, or witnessed his legendary displays, but he seems to be one of those rare characters who left behind nothing but good memories, except perhaps a little envy at his skill. RIP
