Helicopters in mid-air collision Malaysia

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix » Sun Nov 08, 2020 1:42 pm

Two helicopters from the same training school in Malaysia collide in mid-air. Two dead.

Graphic video below:

Agree - a shocking sight - lookout problem again maybe? Just a few seconds is all it takes.

There are extremely disturbing shots of the crashed aircraft and the two bodies on YouTube, which appear to have been uploaded by The Sun. What an disgusting lack of respect towards the dead and their families. Is that the British newspaper which printed the 'Gotcha' headline during the Falklands War?

Really sad to see. Two solo students, not looking out?

I think both aircraft had two occupants. Two in one survived, two in the other didn't. The pilot who died was ex-RMN and his passenger/student was a former executive in MAS. I will have another check to confirm that.

Thanks for the detail FD2.

I've looked at YouTube again and had a look at the local newspapers - there are about 15 clips concerning the crash - some like C16's which was uploaded by local paper The Star have blurred out the shots of the two bodies but that descent of the stricken aircraft is hard to forget.

The local paper The Sun and some others have uploaded the coverage I was upset about but I guess it's just different cultures. An updated article by the The Straights Times has the correct details of who was in each aircraft. It looks as though the former CEO of MAS and his female passenger got away with it and the CFI (retd RMN) and his passenger didn't:

I suspect the two Sun newspapers occupy similar positions in the quality press rankings of their two countries!

The vertical rate of descent as seen in the video is very disconcerting indeed...

One of the Youtube videos shows an unattributed 'FR24' type trace showing the two machines flying together for a while??
