Episode 6, the extra episode.

Streamed it tonight. Usual annoying little things like racial 'quotas'; a Sea King that is so badly out of track that it sounds just like the standard recording of a Jet Ranger ; an RAF Sea King with the 'Royal Air Force' wording replaced by a big sticker saying 'Royal Navy'; strange chatter on the UHF; a commanding officer who describes his executive officer as a 'prick' to a subordinate, even if the subordinate is the senior warrant officer onboard ; a submarine bouncing around after the reactor being 'scrammed' despite having a submerged displacement of just under 16,000 tons etc., like it's a problem that might never have been thought of.

It's the old story - if you don't know or bother about these things it appears to be a well acted, suspense building murder mystery at sea with the possibility of Vlad's nasty boys not far away. Again - with the stages they have constructed - well done - because unless you've been there you just don't know do you? Try not to think of plywood and odd valve wheels etc. The XO really is a prick so that's suspicious; the admiral is just too tough and steely; the bouncing is standard sub in distress etc - they are all for dramatic effect. They're all going to die when the hull crushes! But there's episode two next so maybe not just yet.

I behaved impeccably GG - no cushions chewed or dogs kicked.

FD2, one thing I thought was good was the full up 'on my last order'. Having been in the motion Sim I thought that wasn't bad.

What really got me at the end was not the steely admiral but his shirt sleeves - far too long and sticking out of his jacket.

PN - Does the Navy have a motion Sim for the Vanguard Class? Great if they have done a Sim up to work properly!

Like Uncle Albert might have said, "Back in my day, the Executive Branch could sub-specialise in quite a few areas, from hydrography to clearance diving to ATCO to TAS, Gunnery, submarines, to aircrew etc etc and one of them was communications, based at their HQ HMS Mercury at Petersfield in Hampshire. They used to put on a sort of Noel Coward type act and shoot their shirt cuffs, wear a nice hanky in the breast pocket - also sometimes one up the cuff of their reefer jackets - and often wear scent or aftershave. Manly stuff of course" Maybe the admiral is really a closet communicator.

FD2, I don't know but they did for the Resolutions so no reason why not. It certainly surprised us when the deck just dropped.

Never have so many cliches and modern plot devices been shoehorned into a series! In addition to those in 86 above we have a 'troubled' detective; lesbian relationship troubling her even more more; late boyfriend's wee daughter taken to grandparents and causing even more distraction; the hull crushing threat as the boat flooded and plunged deeper and deeper; nasty old SNP losing track of their morality in pursuit of the cherished no nukes agenda; Russian ships and subs multiplying like bacteria and then the heroine doing a short course in overcoming her fear of watery confined spaces. Mrs FD2 found it a bit too claustrophobic for her liking.

The racial quota was right over the top but that's to be expected in these woke days.The captain came through and held his nerve as we knew he would but suffered a wardrobe malfunction when he anticipated promotion and wore captain's epaulettes for a while.

I thought there were moments of real suspense and should have known that the admiral and XO should turn out to be national heroes in the end, as soon as they were portrayed as pricks at the start. I loved Lorne MacFadyen's Scottish/Russian spy's determination and threatening manner and Rose Leslie's lantern jawed 'tec'. I just wanted to hear her say "You know nothing Amy Silva!"

Overall not such a bad series if the viewer isn't troubled/doesn't know about these nit picky things, just as I wouldn't know about things in a drama about Pongoes in the mud.
