G~Man, thanks for the heads up on this one. Really worthwhile session. Is your video available online anywhere? I am glad that lady luck and your skill means that you are here to share your experience with nincompoops like me. Very thought provoking.

Yes indeedy--one for each conductor I hit..... Here is what it looked like from the camera ship when we did the re-creation video.....and yes I had to hover there for about 5 minutes while the camera aircraft videoed from all angles, you can see the wires I hit, click on the image to make it bigger:

Dumb question perhaps, but how effective are helicopter wire cutters in statistical terms?

In the time I have been flying fixed wing aircraft from my local airfield, there have been two wire strikes on the approach to runway 03/21, both fixed wing, that have resulted in 3 deaths and one extraordinary escape, although the aircraft in the latter case, was also written off, yet, even today, the wires still don't have red balls attached to them.

They work really well if the wire actually goes into the cutter. There are some accidents out there where they missed. SoCal Edison had one where the cutters took out two of the three lines but the third line missed and took down the helicopter killing both on board.
