MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - A quick-thinking pilot made a daring emergency landing in a Mesa neighborhood early Saturday morning.

Mesa fire and police say around 6 a.m., a Bell 47 helicopter suddenly began malfunctioning mid-flight. The pilot had to think quickly to make an emergency landing in a neighborhood near 8th Avenue and Sirrine.

“Went to get coffee and my dad was like you got to go around the neighborhood because a helicopter is in the middle of the street and I was like oh my gosh!” said Sheree Hopper. “It was just amazing that he got it down where he did because it was over on that side of the road and landed it right up against the side walk so traffic could still get through.”

The pilot was able to land safely and the helicopter had minor damage. No one on the ground was injured. The Federal Aviation Administration says the helicopter was experiencing engine issues and is continuing to investigate this incident with the National Transportation Safety Board.

That Jet Ranger crash landing was quite some impact. I imagine that were some sore backs the following day. Reports indicate that, as C16 noted, the helicopter suffered a tail rotor issue. Kudos to the pilot for making it down relatively unscathed.

Apparently it was a pipeline survey aircraft on a test flight.

If it's on a test flight, why is it anywhere near a residential area?
Looks to me like he should have headed ESE from the airport
And yes, I've done test flights under FAA rules. First thing the FAA guy said was "Don't go anywhere near residential areas". In fact, that was the only thing he said, apart from "I'm not coming with you", despite it being an FAA requirement for him to do so

Sorry to see that accident and also about the sorry state of the so-called journalism and misuse and mangling of the English language in the 'Daily Fail'.

Looks like a tail rotor failure (as FD2 said) or loss of tail-rotor effectiveness and control, possibly due to overpulling in the hover on a hot Mexican "high density altitude" day.

I can just imagine the sort of prolonged high power needed to hover out of ground effect on that recce flight. The people they might have been looking for might just have heard them coming! Staying with friends in Newcastle several years ago the police helicopter was hovering at about 500ft half a mile or more away at midnight and the noise kept us awake for an hour or so, but we didn't mind so much as we read in the paper next day they had caught some scrotes, so that was a win.

I think they have done away with proofreaders - they have gone forth into the World to find other jobs.

Seriously though I think most online papers, with or without a paywall, just don't bother with these niceties as it lowers the salary bill at the end of the month.
