President Donald Trump announced the Pentagon’s decision to move forward with a next-generation fighter jet titled F-47 on Friday in joint remarks alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth from the Oval Office.
“At my direction, the United States Air Force is moving forward with the world’s first sixth-generation fighter jet, number six, sixth generation, nothing in the world comes even close to it, and it’ll be known as the F-47,” Trump said.
The president went on to say an experimental version of the F-47 has been flying for almost five years.
“It’s something the likes of which nobody has seen before,” he said, “and this has been in the works for a long period of time.”
Boeing will spearhead the development of the F-47 Air Force’s fighter, following a “rigorous” competition between the uppermost aerospace companies.
“After a rigorous and thorough competition between some of America’s top aerospace companies, the Air Force is going to be awarding the contract for the next generation air dominance platform to Boeing,” Trump announced.
More on the jet: Late-last year, the Air Force paused the decision on how to proceed with the sixth-generation fighter. The Air Force said in December that then-Secretary Frank Kendall would defer the decision to the Trump administration.
The Next Generation Air Dominance program (NGAD) is intended to produce the US military’s sixth-generation fighter jet, newer and more advanced than the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lighting II, which has suffered from major cost overruns and delays.
Elon Musk has railed against the F-35, instead advocating for unmanned drone swarms as a cheaper, more effective weapon. On social media in November, Musk said “Meanwhile, some idiots are still building manned fighter jets like the F-35.”
When Lockheed Martin was awarded the F-35 in October 2001, the weapons maker said the program would cost approximately $200 billion. The company’s CEO promised the F-35 would be “capable and affordable” and be produced “on schedule and cost.” More than two decades later, the total cost of the program has exceeded $2 trillion, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), as the military services “plan to use it less.”

Something looking remarkably similar will be coming out from China in the very near future for sure!

F-47 Program Details Revealed In New Graphic

The first members of a planned fleet of more than 185 Boeing F-47s fighters that feature advanced stealth, a top speed over Mach 2 and a combat radius greater than 1,000 nm could be “operational” between 2025-29, the U.S. Air Force’s top officer said on May 13.
The tweeted graphic from the official account of Gen. David Allvin, the Air Force chief of staff, confirmed several basic features of the aircraft, whose overall shape and most other performance and schedule details remain cloaked in secrecy. President Donald Trump announced the contract award to Boeing on March 21.
In some ways, the data verifies speculation that the Air Force requirements for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter would emphasize significantly greater range than the 690 nm unrefueled mission radius of a Boeing F-15EX and the 670 nm, unrefueled mission radius of the Lockheed Martin F-35.
The one-way, “1,000+ nm” capability on Allvin’s graphic places the F-47 in the same category of the General Dynamics F-111, a regional fighter-bomber and radar jammer that the Air Force retired nearly 30 years ago.
But the mission of the F-47 remains “air superiority,” suggesting a fundamentally different role than that performed by the F-111.
As expected, the Allvin graphic confirmed that the F-47 will feature better stealth performance than the Lockheed F-22. The latter is listed as a “stealth+” aircraft, but the F-47 enjoys a “stealth++” description.
The “operational” term for the F-47 refers to the Air Force’s plan to reach first flight by the end of the decade.
