Nonpilots To Command RAF?
“We have quite significant amounts of untapped cognitive diversity that we are trying to break into and give a voice to.”

Re: Nonpilots To Command RAF?
The dreaded spectre of "Diversity" rides again..
Surely those who have demonstrated superior performance throughout their training should be considered as potential candidates for the CAS job. By definition, these will come from the ranks of FJ pilots. (what am I saying?!)
I fear we're about to witness another demonstration of the old adage: "If it ain't broken, fix it until it is.."

Sure, promote a blanket stacker.

Re: Nonpilots To Command RAF?
Does the Chief of the Army always come from an infantry/cavalry background?
Has a Sapper, Clerk or Signaler ever got the job?
I assume that psc is a pre-requisite to reach any rank that might be considered for the job. At Staff College are Clerks & Cooks allowed in?

Thinking abut it; if an Infantry guy can be qualifies to be the Army Chief, maybe the Chief of the Air Staff should be a Rock!

Kitchener was commissioned into the Royal Engineers. RAF students on the Advanced Staff Course come from all Branches, not just aircrew. I always remember the opening words of a 4* American Cavalry General to one of the first lectures of the course. “There are four things a successful Commander in wartime will worry about. They are: Logistics, logistics, logistics and logistics.”

I once read the FEAF war plan during Confrontation. Prominent was the memorandum from SHELL on its ability to deliver aviation fuel on a daily basis. I forget the units but the numbers were very large. I am not sure what would have happened had the Indonesians targeted the refineries.

Re: Nonpilots To Command RAF?
An element of this topic is already under discussion on the P-8A thread, a danger of dilution of the conversation?
Unless it becomes a subject of cross-service migration in which case run with it?

Re: Nonpilots To Command RAF?
??? That thread is about tactical command of a maritime operation, not this topic! No dilution?BM wrote:An element of this topic is already under discussion on the P-8A thread, a danger of dilution of the conversation?
Link to that thread posted here viewtopic.php?f=45&t=5188&hilit=poseidon to save other poor souls having to search back 5 pages to find it!! However, it is raining outside.

Is this open to an OC Admin thread?
Shopping in M&S wearing the green nylon jacket, ground crew for the use of, and not personal issue?
The underspend footpath at Kinloss.
Ditto Lyneham across the football pitch for the Bonfire display crowd.
Or hats will be worn by visitors to SHQ at all times.
Or ditto on ASI out doors and obeyed only by the 4 senior officers.

I'm rather surprised that my comment about the prospects of the Chief of the Air Staff being a Rock, hasn't raised an eyebrow.
Was it simply too outrageous?

Re: Nonpilots To Command RAF?
Why not?? At Scampton, there was a Supply Sqn tee-shirt with the caption "If flying was difficult, the Suppliers would do it". Unfortunately the OC Supply at the time was related to a jellyfish and the tee-shirt was banned from being worn on station. The same OC Supply also banned another tee-shirt which showed two little red jets held by a Vulcan's slightly modified main undercarriage with the caption "Well, that's breakfast taken care of" following a whinge from people who wore flying coveralls the same colour as the jets.
