The jet involved was an F-15C, a single-seater version of the long-established Boeing twin engine fighter, which has been used by the US air force since 1979.

The coastguard said it received reports of a plane going down into the sea 74 nautical miles off Flamborough Head on the Yorkshire coast. “The HM Coastguard helicopter from Humberside has been sent along with Bridlington and Scarborough RNLI lifeboats,” a spokesman added.

The 48th Fighter Wing, which has operated from Lakenheath since 1960, has more than 4,500 “active-duty military members”. Its mission statement is to “provide worldwide responsive combat air power and support”.

In October 2014, an F-15D fighter jet based at Lakenheath crashed in fields near Spalding in Lincolnshire. The pilot ejected safely, suffering only minor injuries, and no one on the ground was hurt.

A US air force investigation found the crash was caused by the “angle of attack” of the aircraft and imperfections in the assembly of the jet’s nose cap.

In October 2015, the US pilot Maj Taj Sareen died when his F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed on farmland near Lakenheath. A subsequent investigation found the 34-year-old did not report problems with his aircraft before takeoff.

Reported at 09:40 this morning! Hope he/she has been recovered safely!

Lakenheath always good with their MATZ penetration permissions.

BBC have a reporter at Flamborough Head with a camera looking out to sea (which is covered in mist) - unable to see where the F15 crashed . . .

Even on a clear day you wouldn't be able to see 85 statute miles.

Did the pilot eject? So long, so little comment...

No parachute was seen, but the fog might have prevented the others from seeing.

SAR S92 RTB about half an hour ago. Same-same the two RNLI boats. Several Survey vessels doing side-scan, swathe sounding, and ROV search of the debris field to find the pilot.

Not looking good. If he was afloat he would have been found.

Somewhere in Suffolk a pair of sympathetic USAF officers are making that ghastly visit to a family with the news that nobody wants to bear.

Hmmmmm...

I remember this very well, as I was living in the area at the time. Very similar conditions to today's. Not wishing to pre-judge the situation in any way, simply making a comparison.

Sky News television said the plane had circled in the area before disappearing.

It is very sad.

Why then Plumb everyone is up in arms because Trump wants to reduce the number of US military personnel in Europe, by over a
half ,because there is no longer a "fergotten war"

Seen - I think you are still very confused. I understand the plan is to remove troops from 'delinquent' GERMANY, not RAF Lakenheath. Perhaps you should pay a little more attention to the delinquent twatterings?

I'm not at all "up in arms" about the idea of The Empire drawing down its occupation forces in the land of the Hun and on Airstrip One. Bring it on, I say. Let the bastards **** back home where they belong.

The myth that we should all be afraid of having a knock on the door from a fur-hatted soldier with snow on his boots is so last century. =;

Despite the fact that I'm a Gringo Go Home sorta guy, or perhaps because thereof, I'm greatly saddened that a young life has been lost. I'm aware of the fact that somewhere stateside there's a family in inconsolable grief and that there's a squadron at Lakenheath who are in shock, especially the other three pilots in that flight at the time of the accident. Most especially his wingman or leader if it was a two-on-two game at the time of impact with the merciless oggin.
