Whoops

Just a few scratches - it'll buff out with some T-cut.

Re: Whoops
My brother was invited to do so when he backed a fuel bowser into the tail of a C-130 back in his day. As the SADF didn't pay very well the poor bugger would still be paying the damage bill off to this day if they had been serious, and he was still alive!4mastacker wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 9:39 amA "Watch this" moment?
Will someone be "invited" to make a contribution towards the cost of the damage. I believe that was a method employed to avoid a more formal entry on someone's service record.

Re: Whoops
I'm surprised they are using strobes in formation! Is that American 'thing'? Apart from the obvious risk of ramming a Marine Corps KC130 there is little other collision risk...............

Re: Whoops
Strobes must create a really confusing visual situation in or around cloud, particularly at night!

Re: Whoops
I notice they refer to IFR, not AAR!
I understood IFR was stopped because of the well know Instrument Flight Rules use of the acronym.

Re: Whoops
AAR or IFR they seem to be using the probe and drogue and not the flying boom which might make connection a tad easier for the pilot (although limits the number of aircraft that can refuelled simultaneously)?
What do the flying boomers or the errant droguers here think?Once in position, and still in communication with the tanker pilot, the F-35 pilot selects the “Refuel” OSB from his flight control display. On the F-35B and F-35C variants, which use a probe-and-drogue system.
For the F-35A variant, which uses a flying boom aerial refueling, the pilot flies in a tight formation with the tanker. An operator at the back of the tanker and the F-35 pilot work together to ensure the boom aligns with the aircraft and is inserted directly into the fuel tank opening

I see the US pilots have to do six connections to qualify.

There are pro's & con's for each system.TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 3:38 pmAAR or IFR they seem to be using the probe and drogue and not the flying boom which might make connection a tad easier for the pilot (although limits the number of aircraft that can refuelled simultaneously)?
The USAF use the boom, the USN use the probe & drogue.
Choppers have a problem refuelling from a boom!

Some sort of operation Black Buck scenario with refuellers fueling refuellers!CharlieOneSix wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 4:11 pmMy mind works in funny ways.....Only the Navy could do this - an airborne daisy chain!

Re: Whoops
I have a photo that I will try to transfer to here with A KC-10 refueling another KC-10 passing 1,000' below me.
Quite the sight.
F/A with me, during other pilot's lav break couldn't quite get why I was so excited.

That's cruel. You could at least have pretended it was because she was there.

Re: Whoops
A partial transcript of Raider 50's emergency call as kindly previously provided by C16...
So how did this chap overrun and end up taking out the props on the starboard wing?
https://www.flyingmag.com/story/news/he ... ZKQh-T4CwKIn an audio transcript of the event, Raider 50 (the KC-130J’s call sign) came back onto LA Center—after being handed off around 4 pm local time to operate within the Kane West MOA—in order to declare an emergency following the collision: “LA Center, Raider Five-Zero declaring an emergency, mid-air collision…we have two engines out, we’re leaking fuel, and might be on fire. We’re in an emergency descent at this time.” The crew had partial control of the aircraft and was headed for the Thermal airport. The number 3 and 4 engines had been impacted in the collision in some manner.
So how did this chap overrun and end up taking out the props on the starboard wing?

Re: Whoops
I guess he/she might have been crap at formation joins?
Reminds me of QFI days at the RAF College of Knowledge when, if leading a three-ship with 2 students on the wings, we would ensure they had the under-powered Mk3 JPs while the leader had the Mk4 so that when practising 'breaks and rejoins' from formation we could power out of the ensuing crash when faced with Bloggs belly-up to us on an over-excited rejoin.......................
Interested in the fuel flowing from the port wing - I guess the 130 has fuel dump? Maybe that was in progress?

From the port wing on the ground, yes. Interestingly he informed ATC of a fuel leak in flight! From the starboard wing?Boac wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 8:11 amI guess he/she might have been crap at formation joins?

I assume the damage to the blade tips on the port side was caused by the landing.

Re: Whoops
I think the 35 'demolished' the HDU on the starboard wing on its way to to props which would have caused a bit of a fuel leak

Would the USN/USMC have been taking video of the event as SOP?
