Nice idea when it's all working. You lose the depth perception though. It would be cheaper to give all the controllers a set of VR goggles and probably far more bomb-proof.

Yes - that was the trouble with the S61 simulator in visual mode. It took a while to get used to depth and how far away a particular feature was. Eventually we could fly though the hangars if the doors were open, which had one poor guy scrabbling for the window, or anything in fact, after he'd just been put through his paces with multiple 'failures' IMC. Then someone passed a cup of coffee in through the window at 3,000ft...

The VR goggles sound like a good idea but far too cheap a solution.

Then there was the time when a Wessex was sitting in a 30ft hover dunking at night when the sonar operator/aircrewman climbed up the outside of the fuselage and offered one of the pilots a coffee. That was Leading Airman Edge if I remember correctly.

On my S61 conversion in Stavangar in the simulator, first session of cockpit drills, we eventually got both engines going and just before the pre-take off checks the simulator instructor, GN, who was new to the job unintentionally fired us off at a great rate of knots along the ground towards a hangar. Instinct took over and I grabbed a handful of collective and got airborne with no stabilsation engaged. Roars of laughter from GN in the back!

George (British Airways Helicopters) helping someone into a strop to be winched from the Aberdeen LIfeboat. Colin Larcombe (Bristow Helicopters) at the other end of the wire. Both former RN aircrew characters and sadly missed. RIP

C16 - If you got the right instructor you could wazz around a little between those sweaty IMC sessions to relax a little. Then you found out the sim didn't go tilt if you 'hit' buildings...

FD2 - I’d forgotten the coincidence with George and your ditching. Colin Larcombe was on the same squadron as me and became a good friend in Bristow. Sadly missed as you say - the Aircrewmans Association did him proud at his funeral.
