We are moving rapidly from the currently dystopian world we live in, to some truly terrible post dystopian apocalypse, where our machines, will wage war, unbidden by human control, as necessary, according to the Byzantine algorithms of AI systems, that will far outperform our meagre wetware, in the very near future! The world of the science fiction writers will have arrived and we will not have Arnold Schwarzenegger to save us!

What happens if the drone doesn't receive instructions?
Does it circle or land?

Or, as suggested, does it engage combat mode?

Field tests will ensure the algorithms’ accuracy and verify that the system continuously operates within the constraints established during mission planning.
Cue hollow laughter...

Nutmeg wrote that.
'Yes, Madam, I am drunk, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly.' Sir Winston Churchill.

It would appear that the U.S. Secretary for defense is anything but.

Many years ago as a young pilot on my first squadron I was buttonholed by an Air Commodore who asked me what it was like to be in a dead-end job. I was rather taken aback by this as the ring on his sleeve was about twenty times thicker than mine.

"What do you mean?" Sir.

"Don't you realise that you are going to be replaced by missiles and you will be out of a job."

"That's great, Sir. I will be able to fly around the World from one hotel to another with a cabin full of randy hostesses."

I do not think that was the answer he was expecting.

That was in 1962.

(At least that was what I wish I had said.)
