Aerobatic team is 7. All S&L fly-pasts add another 2 a/c using team 'management' pilots when appropriate.

Weren't there nine in the flyover of GB GP?

PP
'Flying' a Hawk and participating in the Sparrows requires vastly different levels of skill and training - after all the 'managers' are capable of 'flying' the aircraft.

To put this in perspective, any RAF fighter pilot should be able to 'hang on' to the outside of a large formation on a fly-past, as ably demonstrated by the '70' formation of Typhoos over Buck House.

However, 'OC Red Arrows' (NB not the team leader) is an ex team-leader himself.

What is the problem about 'an affair' with a colleague (even allowing for same-sex relationships)? - unless it is the OC's wife?

Well it was probably a colleague's wife. Apart from that there seems to be dissention in the ranks. Not good from a flight safety aspect. This is a leadership problem. Maybe they should forget the rest of the season and start again with a new team.

It takes two to tango - usually a willing or enthusiastic partner.

When I joined 10 Sqn I was warned to expect to recognise the wife of a colleague. She was the (ex)wife of a colleague of mine on 32 Sqn. Must say though that she did much better second time around.

It has got worse.
That explains a lot, but we still don't know about the 'Greek' incident.

Not an easy team to lead.

I don't see the likes of Ray Hanna and Dicky Ducket to name just two having these problems.

Well, there was a 'wife-swap' while I was on the team (not with another team member) and while it was quite distracting it was well and professionally handled by all.

I wonder if the recent reported pilot 'sickness' which has dropped the display to a six-ship lately could be indicative of further 'unrest'?

Boac, do you think that they should have Sqn Ldrs on the main team now? No.1 is the boss and shouldn't be able to have a team member telling him where to go. This seems to have happened here.

That did not matter in my time. The boss is the boss and rank was immaterial. I don't think this was the problem here.

Sadly, I think, since 1971.

Maybe it is time to bring back the Yellowjacks! With a hat tip to the Poachers & Red Pelicans (Jet Provost), the Black Knights (Hunters) et al.

Can't find footage of the original team but a Gnat in this display, team very local to TGA, is redolent in the fine Yellow colouring.

The name adopted by the team (derived from the team leader's call-sign) was disapproved of by higher authority, who recognised the concept of a Gnat aerobatic team as attractive, but felt the name and the yellow colour of the aircraft wrong. (The name Daffodil Patrol was once believed to have been suggested). It was also thought that the team had maverick instincts, and needed to be brought into the mainstream so the team was officially reformed, in 1965, as The Red Arrows. The Red Arrows continued flying the Gnat until 1979 when it was superseded by the British Aerospace Hawk for the 1980 season.
Seek and ye shall find..

The current Red Arrows team would be well advised to listen to the this video, particularly the trust and confidence bit (a well as getting on on the ground in close proximity as well!|
My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.
